Dave Bautista is the new Kratos: why God of War recast Ryan Hurst four months into the shoot
Prime Video's God of War series has been filming in Vancouver since February 2026 with Ryan Hurst in the lead. As of August 20, 2026, none of that footage exists as far as the show is concerned.
Dave Bautista has closed his deal to play Kratos. Here's how the swap happened.
The injury that reset the production
Hurst, announced as Kratos in January 2026, tore a bicep performing a stunt in late June — four months into the shoot. The injury required surgery and a long recovery, which would have pushed the production's return to 2027. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television paused filming immediately, and a couple of weeks later decided to recast rather than wait out the calendar.
Everything Hurst shot is being scrapped. The series restarts from scratch.
Why Bautista, and why so fast
The role needs a specific silhouette, and Bautista already has it — no months of prep, no bulking schedule. He also has an existing relationship with the studio through both My Spy movies, The Wrecking Crew, and the upcoming Highlander and Road House 2. Amazon and Sony reached out shortly after the recast call was made; Variety reported talks in early August, and the deal closed weeks later.
Prep started in August for a mid-October production restart in Vancouver. The two-season order shoots back to back.

- Mandy Patinkin as Odin.
- Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor.
- Ed Skrein as Baldur, with Max Parker as Heimdall.
- Teresa Palmer as Sif.
Ronald D. Moore, who developed the 2004 Battlestar Galactica, runs the show. It adapts the 2018 game and, presumably across season 2, 2022's Ragnarök.
What the show is actually about
Per the official logline, father and son set out to scatter the ashes of Faye — wife and mother — across the Norse realms:
"Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human."
The February first-look image of Hurst as Kratos generated weeks of online argument about the character's look, so Bautista's casting also resets that conversation.
For the record: Hurst was already in the franchise before any of this. He voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök in 2022.
