The late director was working on a mysterious project starring Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet’s actresses.

It’s safe to say David Lynch was willing to continue working on several more ideas he had in mind despite the progressing illness, even though all of those were doomed to remain on paper.

The iconic director passed away back in January, leaving behind a cinematic legacy full of highly acclaimed movies which were some sort of pretty bold innovation at the time of their release.

In the past couple of years, Lynch was rumoured to be working on a mysterious show for Netflix which eventually never received a confirmation. However, the project which the director has been developing during his last years was supposed to turn into another big hit as, apparently, it already secured leading roles for two major actresses that starred in Lynch’s most famous movies.

David Lynch Was Working on a Show With Laura Dern and Naomi Watts As Leads

Both actresses, who starred in the director’s Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive respectively, were ready to collaborate with him on a new project just a couple of months before his shocking death, as Naomi Watts recently revealed.

In an interview with Los Angeles Times, the actress said both she and Dern had met the director and “had a beautiful lunch at his house” back in November.

“I knew he’d been unwell but he was in great spirits. He wanted to go back to work — Laura and I were like, ‘You can do it! You could work from the trailer.’ He was not, in any way, done. I could see the creative spirit alive in him”, she recalled.

Watts also added that her reunion with Lynch years after wrapping Mulholland Drive had filled her “with just so much love and hope” about a potential show that Lynch could’ve started filming soon.

Old Rumours Suggested Lynch’s Final Project Could’ve Been a Mulholland Drive Spinoff

Despite all the speculation circulating in social media ever since 2019, there’s still no saying about what exactly the director was supposed to film for Netflix.

The news first flushed in years ago when it was revealed Lynch had pitched an idea for a limited series to Netflix’s bosses, but the plan was soon shut down due to the 2020 pandemic.

However, the mysterious project, which some thought would be a Mulholland Drive spinoff or a Twin Peaks sequel, still had everyone talking; additionally, both Naomi Watts and Laura Dern were seen attending a meeting with Lynch at Netflix headquarters back in the day.

Still, there’s no other confirmation rather than the one shared by Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos soon after the news about Lynch’s passing flooded the social media.

“It was a David Lynch production, so filled with mystery and risks but we wanted to go on this creative ride with this genius. First Covid, then some health uncertainties led to this project never being produced but we made it clear that as soon as he was able, we were all in”, Sarandos stated in his tribute to the director back in January.
