Despite impressive box office results, the movie is the one to keep Disney’s disheartening trend alive.

Disney- produced animated films remained the industry’s stable leaders for quite long, though a couple of past years proved the company was heading towards worse times.

The most recent example is this year’s Oscar ceremony where Latvian filmmaker and animator Gints Zilbalodis’s movie Flow surpassed Disney’s big-budget box office hit Inside Out 2, taking home the first Academy Award in the country’s history.

The signs of the company’s slight decay were showing even before, when its latest animated feature was met with scepticism, despite later on garnering major success in theatres worldwide.

The movie has so far gained more than $700 million and is currently getting ready to arrive on Disney+.

In case you still haven’t seen the movie in theatres or just didn’t catch it in there, Mufasa: The Lion King will become available for watching on Disney+ starting from March 26.

Released on Christmas Eve back in 2024, the film came as both prequel and sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 animated feature The Lion King and follows the story of young Mufasa, the future king of the Pride Lands.

Recounted by the Pride Lands’ shaman and wise mandrill Rafiki to Simba and Nala’s young daughter Kiara, the story goes back in time when Mufasa, separated from his parents, finds an ally in a young lion named Taka, the heir to the royal bloodline.

Despite fierce protests from Taka’s lion father, the two embark on an adventure which will ultimately challenge their friendship.

Mufasa: The Lion King Is Another Critically Panned Disney Movie

Despite high hopes that the studio kept ahead of the new chapter’s release several months ago, Mufasa wasn’t really a big box office success during its first days in theatres worldwide. That said, the movie kicked off with way less earnings than expected, though later on passed the mark of $700 million with the initial budget of $200 million.

However, even with eventually gained status of a box office hit, Mufasa came as a continuation of Disney’s discouraging trend, following into its predecessor’s footsteps and getting an average critical score of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes (which is a little upgrade, considering The Lion King’s 51%).

Still, the movie has been the audiences’ darling ever since, so its upcoming release on Disney+ might even overshadow its ongoing issues with critics.
