Tom Cruise has become somewhat of an action movie icon in the world of Hollywood.

Having risen to fame early in his career with his leading roles in acclaimed movies such as Risky Business in 1983 and Top Gun in 1986. From there he continued to star in box office hits like The Colour of Money and Born on the Fourth of July. The latter earned him his first Golden Globe as well as a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor.

As of today Tom Cruise has won several accolades and is one of the most bankable stars of all time, with his movies grossing over $11 billion worldwide. He has starred in a staggering 53 or more movies to date.

Despite three nominations over his career as a movie star, many fans are surprised to learn that Tom Cruise is yet to have the honor of being awarded an Oscar.

Does Tom Cruise Deserve an Oscar More Than Performances from The Whale or Elvis?

He has been nominated for the award for Best Actor based on his performances in Jerry Maguire, Born on the Fourth of July, and for Best Supporting Actor in Magnolia, which was the closest the actor has gotten to winning the award.

Many felt that he was robbed, having stolen the show in Magnolia he lost the award to Michael Cain for his performance in The Cider House Rules, which was deemed far less memorable.

How does the biggest action star of the last two decades keep falling short? His fans may think he has earned an Oscar, and some critics and movie buffs suggest that he may be falling short because his movies are too mainstream, with the Oscars not often intersecting with blockbuster movies.

Another problem may be that his best work hasn't been noticed. His roles in A Few Good Men, Collateral as well as Interview with a Vampire were praised by highly respected critics, but nothing further came from these performances.

Luckily for fans of the megastar, it seems his career is far from over. The actor is set to star in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Mission Impossible 8, and Luna Park, the sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, is said to be in planning.

And with the recent release and box office success of Top Gun: Maverick, experts have predicted that Tom Cruise may potentially earn a place on the Oscars list for a nomination for the Best Actor Award. With his last nomination for an Oscar being nearly 23 years ago, this may be the chance Tom Cruise has been waiting for to secure his first Oscar.
