East of Eden Netflix release date and cast: Florence Pugh plays the Steinbeck villain the James Dean movie mostly left out
Seventy-one years after her grandfather filmed a third of the novel, Zoe Kazan is finishing the family business — starting with the character Hollywood never had the nerve to put at the center.
East of Eden is on Netflix today — October 1, all seven episodes — and the pitch is right there in the casting: Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames, the most purely frightening character John Steinbeck ever wrote. A teenage arsonist turned brothel madam who weaponizes everyone's need to believe she's innocent, Cathy is the novel's black heart. She is also, famously, barely in the 1955 movie.
That's the wound this series is built on. Elia Kazan's film — the one that made James Dean immortal — adapted only the final third of the novel, keeping an older Kate on the margins (Jo Van Fleet won an Oscar for the sliver) and cutting Cathy's entire monstrous origin story. The person relitigating that choice is Elia's own granddaughter: Zoe Kazan, who wrote and executive-produced the series, rewatched the 1955 film and found
"It was less like the book than I remembered."
She's clear-eyed about the whole arrangement:
"The irony was not lost on me. There's a literal way that I'm following in my family's footsteps."
The Cathy of it all
Kazan's version spans the full multigenerational sprawl, Civil War through World War I, with Cathy as its spine rather than its footnote. Her read on the character refuses both the monster frame and the redemption frame — Cathy is "irredeemable, irresistible, and so full of agency," and pointedly not a girlboss retrofit: "I don't think Cathy is a feminist. I think she cares about herself." As for why Pugh:
"Florence looks like a doll, but she has this steel rod inside. Cathy is all action, like a shark that always has to be moving forward."
Pugh, for her part, has been playing the character as a person rather than a demon: what drives Cathy, she says, is "her need for her own control, her own identity, her own life essentially."
