Elden Ring to Be Adapted, but May Never Be Finished – Because of George R.R. Martin

The writer clearly needs a time management coach.
Elden Ring is the game from FromSoftware and game designer Hidetaka Miyazaki, who became world famous after the release of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.
Elden Ring is Miyazaki's most ambitious and large-scale project to date, and in one of his interviews he even said that he was inspired by Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. And the studio managed to get George R.R. Martin to work on the world-building and narrative part of Elden Ring.
Elden Ring was nominated for seven awards at The Game Awards 2022, but won four – Game of the Year, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best RPG.
George R.R. Martin Confirmed There's Talk of an Elden Ring Movie Adaptation
Elden Ring has also become one of the best-selling games of recent years, so it is not surprising that the movie producers paid attention to it.
George R.R. Martin has hinted that an Elden Ring movie may indeed see the light of day. However, he is not sure about his own involvement in the film's development. Speaking at the IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin confirmed that discussions about an Elden Ring film are ongoing:
“Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring.”
This is not the first time that hints have been made about a possible movie adaptation. Previously, FromSoftware CEO Hidetaka Miyazaki stated that he would not rule out an adaptation, but stressed that it would require a "very strong partner" to make it happen. And it seems that this was a reference to George Martin.
Elden Ring Adaptation Needs George Martin Script-wise…
But there's a catch. No, there are two catches. Before the release of Elden Ring, many players expected the game to have a clear and linear plot. But in Elden Ring, the storyline is presented mainly through either clues or item descriptions.
The characters have become more talkative compared to the Dark Souls trilogy, but many moments of the story still have to be built in your head.
Considering that George Martin has been involved in the worldbuilding and history of this vast and not entirely comprehensible universe, he seems like an ideal candidate for the role of one of the scriptwriters for the planned movie.
…But The Author Need to Finish The Winds of Winter First
However, Martin has honestly admitted that his involvement in the project may be limited due to his work on The Winds of Winter (which, by the way, fans have been waiting over ten years for):
“We'll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know. I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do.”
As we know from the example of Game of Thrones, projects based on Martin's works and under his own supervision have the potential to become great. So let's hope that the author will buy a book on time management, finish The Winds of Winter and get to work on the film adaptation of Elden Ring.
