The whole situation around the scandalous musical just couldn't be messier at this point.

The last couple of weeks have been tough for Emilia Pérez, the cast and crew of which probably couldn’t imagine something even worse than their work being slammed all across the world ahead of the Oscars ceremony.

Now the movie risks leaving the awards season with no major Oscar wins at all since Karla Sofía Gascón’s offensive tweets from several years ago resurfaced as part of Emilia Pérez’s haters’ plan to bring the film down.

While Gascón has been making headlines ever since, her co-stars and Emilia Pérez’s production team mostly remained silent, though it’s only now when the film’s director offered his own take on the whole fuss.

Jacques Audiard Joins the Public Turning Against Karla Sofía Gascón Too

After months of the audiences’ allegations against Emilia Pérez, the director revealed his thoughts about the matter in an interview with Deadline, reflecting on the scandalous tweets that now jeopardise Gascón’s entire career.

According to Audiard, he formed a trusting relationship with the actress while working with her on set, so the bombshell tweets were quite a shocking discovery for him too.

“And when you have that kind of relationship and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course that relationship is affected. It’s as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sofía said is inexcusable,” Audiard continued.

He also added that he hasn’t talked to Gascón since the scandal emerged and, quite frankly, doesn’t really want to as the actress is “really playing the victim. She’s talking about herself as a victim, which is surprising. It’s as if she thought that words don’t hurt.”

Audiard Still Doesn’t Understand Where All Emilia Pérez Hatred Comes From

Talking about the movie ahead of the Oscars ceremony where it still might get several nods out of its 13 nominations, Audiard revealed that he has no idea why Emilia Pérez had been publicly slammed for months as his initial idea for the movie had nothing to do with racism and cultural misrepresentation that the director is accused of.

Many have been repeatedly stating that, as a French person, Audiard had no right to draw his own vision about modern-life Mexico, yet he still felt entitled to make a film that seems to be proving all the most audacious stereotypes about the country.

Delving into the matter, Audiard admitted that everything he had on his mind was making an opera which always tends to be a dramatized and stylised version of reality.

“It seems I’m being attacked in the court of realism. Well, I’ve never claimed that I wanted to make a realistic work. If I wanted to make a work that was particularly documented, then I would do a documentary, but then there would be no singing and dancing”, the director stated, once again defending the movie and highlighting that he had never had an intention to criticise Mexico after all.
