Someone is no longer welcome at the upcoming award ceremonies.

Having started off as one of the most acclaimed movies at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Emilia Pérez has been going down in disgrace for months and now might have just lost its chances for a major Oscar win.

The movie caused several consecutive waves of shock recently: first after receiving a whopping 13 Oscar nominations, and a bit later, when its lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón’s offensive tweets from several years ago resurfaced, lurching a new portion of hatred towards the film as a whole.

The situation is getting messier as the Oscar ceremony approaches, and though the Academy had no saying about the matter yet, Emilia Pérez (or rather its lead) still received its first serious backfire.

The first openly trans actress to receive an Oscar nod, Gascón had her chances to actually win the award plummeting when her old tweets insulting Arabs, Black people and even her co-star Selena Gomez were rediscovered by Emilia Pérez’s most devoted haters.

Despite Gascón’s attempts to defend herself, the audiences, her Emilia Pérez’s colleague and even Netflix are now turning against her as, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “there is no great interest on the part of Netflix to provide the usual courtesies afforded by a studio to an Oscar contender, such as transportation and accommodations, to facilitate her attendance at the remaining awards season gatherings”.

That said, the streaming company, who holds the rights for Jacques Audiard’s movie in the US, the UK and Canada, has now almost officially declined to communicate with Gascón in any possible way and stepped away from sponsoring her presence at the Oscars.

On top of that, the actress will also be an unwelcome guest at other major upcoming award shows like AFI, The Critics Choice Awards, Santa Barbara and the Producers Guild Awards.

Meanwhile, Karla Sofía Gascón Denies All Allegations

Trying to put out the kindling flame that keeps growing bigger, the actress once again broke her silence in an interview with CNN en Español, apologizing for the tweets that many might have found rude and offensive, but still stating that she’s not a racist and will continue with her Oscar campaign despite a collective urge to withdraw her nomination.

Delving into the matter, Gascón said that she “cannot renounce a nomination because what I have done is a job and what is being valued is my acting work” and “because I have not committed any crime nor have I harmed anyone, I am not a racist, nor am I anything that all these people have taken it upon themselves to try to make others believe that I am”.
