Emma D’Arcy Describes Favorite ‘House of the Dragon’ Scenes: “So Incredibly Fun”

Battle sequences might not be the easiest ones to do in House of the Dragon, but Emma D’Arcy found joy in helming the most epic scenes of the entire show. Here’s what she had to say about House of the Dragon coming together.
House of the Dragon’s world isn’t all about sunshine and rainbows, but it has its own perks — at least when it comes to dragon-riding scenes.
Coming off the success of its predecessor Game of Thrones, the prequel series has yet to introduce some of the highly anticipated battles between the Targaryens in the upcoming third season.
This might also mean Rhaenyra Targaryen’s actor Emma D’Arcy had lots of fun while filming possibly the deadliest fight sequences in the entire show.
While the new episodes featuring the most shocking deaths won’t be arriving until sometime next year, D’Arcy has just offered a sneak peak into what it’s like to mount a dragon in House of the Dragon — and, honestly, now we all just want to have what they have.
Emma D’Arcy Says Dragon-Riding Scenes in ‘House of the Dragon’ Are a “Fairground Ride” They Are Paid For
Even though many might have suspected that filming House of the Dragon is actually much more fun than watching it kill all its characters one after another, Emma D’Arcy seemingly confirmed those scenes with the Targaryens’ fire-spitting pets are the best that the show could ever offer.
“It's so incredibly fun! And I say this as a person who can be quite dour. I often dread those scenes, until I get there. To describe it, it's essentially an animatronic bucking bronco, six feet in the air. You're mounted up there, and there tends to be blue screen surrounding you. They program the "flight" of the buck, and you hold on, and two men with giant leaf blowers fire wind and air in your face,” the actor revealed in an interview with Gold Derby recently.
If you’re already thinking that this is a dream job, read the actor’s description further.
“That is a bit like, if you remember as a child putting your head out the window of a fast moving car, and you can't quite your breath, and it's gleeful in the chest. A lot of the work for me was wiping the huge grin off my face, because it's a fairground ride that I get paid to go on,” D’Arcy continued.
Emma D’Arcy Favourite ‘House of the Dragon’ Scene Is Season 2’s Most Shocking Plot Twist
It might be that the show’s second season just was way too uneventful for fans to choose from a variety of options, but the scene of Rhaenyra and Alicent’s first encounter years after their relationship fell apart was definitely one of the most surprising and most controversial moments of the entire instalment.
Coincidentally, it also became Emma D’Arcy’s personal favorite.
“It was a favorite scene of mine. Getting to act with Liv is one of the great privileges in my life. But as a result of such scarcity, there was quite a lot of pressure on it. You have two big, knotty dialogue scenes in which to house the whole of that relationship. It felt to me like we were being asked to achieve an epic scale within quite small, narrow parameters,” they said.
When Will ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Be Released?
The show’s next instalment will likely arrive on HBO Max sometime in the summer of 2026.
