Even Jeffrey Dean Morgan Admits This 'The Walking Dead' Death Was a Mistake

The Walking Dead has featured many brutal and shocking deaths, but fans still can't forgive Negan for murdering Glenn. Here's what Jeffrey Dean Morgan thinks about it.
Some viewers may have watched The Walking Dead and not felt any sympathy for Glenn, but we didn't know any of those people. He was a good guy who became an even better person with each passing season, so his death was completely unexpected and brutal.
Glenn's Death Was Expected, Yet Still Shocking
Fans of Robert Kirkman's original comic book series, on which The Walking Dead is based, knew that Glenn was destined to die. However, no one expected his murder to be so ruthless.
For many seasons, Glenn was the heart and soul of The Walking Dead. Despite the madness around him, he remained human and was always ready to rescue others in difficult times.
Even considering that Glenn's death was expected, the scene with Negan by the fire remains one of the most heartbreaking in the entire show.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan Has Expressed Regret Over Negan's Killing of Glenn
As it turns out, viewers aren't the only ones who think Negan shouldn't have killed Glenn. In a First We Feast interview promoting their show Dead City, Maggie's actress, Lauren Cohan, and Negan's actor, Jeffrey Dean Morgan shared their thoughts about the original show.
The latter admitted that if he could change one event in the series, it would be Glenn's death:
“I'm just gonna say this, it would have made both our lives easier, maybe not kill Glenn. [...] I mean, Glenn probably would have died some other way, but I wouldn't have had anything to do with it.”
Glenn's Death Was a Final Straw for Many 'The Walking Dead' Fans
Many viewers couldn't forgive the creators for Glenn's death, and this plot decision caused The Walking Dead's ratings to drop. Even nine years later, fans still consider Glenn's death to be the writers' worst decision, even though it followed the original.
For many, the death of the beloved character was the final straw. Reddit user ChromDelonge wrote:
“Glenn's death was just the breaking point for people after lots of prior issues with pacing, fakeouts and other crap. They saw a favourite character die as one less reason to care.”
Some argue that Glenn's death was a "cheap trick" because, although the character dies in the comics, the writers dragged out the buildup to keep viewers engaged. Redditor lOan671 commented:
“The cliffhanger was another huge issue. People were hyped for Negan and the cliffhanger just took all of the air out of the room. Then the plot just got so ridiculously slow after and they botched just about every new character they introduced.”
But be that as it may, The Walking Dead continues to live and thrive. There are already seven TV series in the franchise, and it seems the creators aren't planning on stopping anytime soon.
