When Joe Mantegna agreed to star in the Criminal Minds reboot, he was hoping for more peaceful fate for his character. But things turned out just the opposite.

All fans of the original series still remember Rossi's wife, Krystall. Krystall Richards, played by Gail O'Grady, was a recurring character on Criminal Minds.

Krystall and David Rossi met at the blackjack table. After a night of fun and drinking, they had an Elvis- themed wedding.

When they sobered up the next morning, Krystall and Rossi agreed to seek an end to their marriage, and did not see each other again for years.

Krystall's Daughter, who was a fan of Rossi's writing, was surprised to learn that her mother was married to this man. Circumstances brought Krystall and Rossi back together, and they got officially married.

In the original series finale, Everett Lynch, the final subject, takes a special interest in Rossi, and the FBI provides extra security for Krystall.

However, Lynch still manages to get to her and takes her hostage.

Rossi later convinces Lynch to take him hostage instead of Krystall. Everyone ended up being alive and having fun at the last party.

However, it turns out that Rossi's wife did not live to see the events of Criminal Minds: Evolution and died of an illness.

This turn of events was a shock to Joe Mantegna, who had been hoping for a slightly different development of his character.

But the actor was not at all against such an arc for David, as it is a reminder that the world is not perfect, even on screen.

"I live by the dictum of 'everybody has a story, nobody gets a free ride,' and this is Rossi's story and he's not getting a free ride right now, but why should he? […]

So, now, we're gonna find out what Rossi is made out of. People can relate to that, especially over the times we've all been through in the last few years," the actor said in his interview with Newsweek.

Now we see that Rossi is drowning in work, causing concern among other team members.

We will probably soon see the consequences of Krystall's death, as the show has been renewed for a second season, although there is no exact release date yet.
