There is just something about teenage sweethearts that is irresistible.

How else would you explain the annoying yet endearing romance of Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton? The two characters frequently switch between being despised or beloved by audiences on Yellowstone , which is part of what fuels the show.

It's true, while fans of the show may whine about how soapy the western gets from time to time – there is no doubt that people feel a connection to Beth and Rip. It could be, perhaps, because the two have been nearly inseparable since Rip arrived on the ranch as a bastard. Or, how Rip has been there for a struggling Beth as she wrestles with substance abuse or the inability to conceive.

Sure, Beth may rank among the least popular characters on Yellowstone, but it always appears like Rip picks up the slack. And, for that reason, gives people somebody to root for despite their chaotic, often fiery relationship. Thus, for better or worse, fans have started to accept that Taylor Sheridan intends on keeping the couple safe until the end of the show.

It's something that Cole Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler on the series, feels like is the most fitting outcome. Hauser recently discussed the unique dynamics of his character's relationship with Beth on Screen Rant. "There's nothing else but the two of [them]," Hauser explained, when questioned if Sheridan has any plans to separate the couple.

He admits that while there are significant issues between Rip and Beth, they make sure to prevent it from destroying the romance. Hauser pointed out that Sheridan writes flashback sequences into Yellowstone that present audiences with more of their history together. Several of these moments are touching and indicate why Beth and Rip are willing to fight to preserve the marriage.

During the season four finale, Rip and Beth finally make it official by exchanging vows. It was a heartfelt moment that left a lot of fans on the brink of tears. Now at the mid-season break of season five of Yellowstone, it's hard to imagine things getting worse for the couple even if Beth's long-time nemesis, step-brother Jamie (Wes Bentley), threatens to silence her for good.

It's a sentiment that is shared by Hauser, who does confess that trouble is brewing on Yellowstone Ranch. The 47-year-old actor revealed that Rip plans on doing everything possible to defend it and has not been exactly welcoming to all the outsiders attempting to infiltrate Governor Dutton (Kevin Costner).

For this reason, the second half of season five will likely feature a ton of Rip as he protects Beth from danger while also defending the property, or as Hauser describes it – "his backyard."
