A recent update on the director's Star Wars project has some fans concerned.

While three new Star Wars films were officially announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, fans were a bit surprised to learn that the fourth film, developed by Taika Waititi, whose popularity has skyrocketed in recent years, was not among them.

Given the current uncertain state of Star Wars movies, with several already canceled, they wondered if it was still in development or had been quietly canceled.

But with the latest update from the director himself, fans have other things to worry about.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Waititi revealed that he has been working on the script for three years, but it remains unfinished for now.

The director claims that he has a really great idea about it, but the legacy of the franchise brings some significant limitations to it.

He said that the middle part is a problem in particular, because if you look at other movies, for example, the characters "can't meet a smuggler with an alien sidekick."

While fans are happy to hear that the movie hasn't been canceled altogether, the fact that the script is apparently still in the very early stages is a bit of a bummer, as it could still end up being canceled.

Another point of concern is the fact that Waititi's vision of the story seems to be at odds with the overall franchise, slowing down the creative process.

Fans fear that this could mean the director is trying to make it a comedy, like two of his MCU Thor movies, which were well-received but still criticized by many for having too many jokes (of varying quality).

Fans say that by adding too much humor, the director damaged the overall tone of the story, which in both films was meant to be dramatic.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017) was literally about the destruction of the hero's home, and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) felt rather strange because of the contrast between the comedy and the dark and tragic antagonist Gorr the God Butcher, brilliantly portrayed by Christian Bale.

So fans are justifiably concerned that the tone of the upcoming Star Wars film may not be in keeping with the overall narrative of the franchise.
