Gordon Ramsay hating the food is practically the premise of Kitchen Nightmares — but not always. A guide to the rare moments the chef found something to praise, including the one meal that went down in the show's history.

The entire economy of Kitchen Nightmares runs on Gordon Ramsay spitting things into napkins. That's the product. We are not tuning in to watch a man enjoy a nice lunch. And yet, scattered across two countries and roughly a million episodes, there are a handful of moments where Gordon puts food in his mouth and — brace yourself — does not immediately ask who hurt the chef.

The shortlist is short

Fan archivists have been cataloguing these sightings like rare birds, and the pickings, per Mashed's roundup, are genuinely slim:

  • Momma Cherri's Soul Food Shack (Brighton): catfish goujons, hush puppies, pineapple salsa — Gordon starts charmed and only escalates from there. More on this in a second, because it's the big one.
  • Handlebar: a chowder that survived contact with the man's palate fully intact.
  • Various one-offs where a single dish gets a nod before the praise drowns in his contempt for everything else on the menu.

For context on how low the bar sits: at Momma Cherri's, his opening review of the building was — quote — "it's definitely a shack from the outside." This is what Gordon sounds like when he's about to fall in love.

The plate-clearing incident

Brighton, Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares UK. Owner Charita "Momma Cherri" Jones serves him barbecue ribs with succotash, and something unprecedented happens: Gordon empties the plate. All of it. He compares it to eating at his mum's, while Charita launches into a victory song about feeding Gordon Ramsay until his plate was clean — a line she has since ridden into a cookbook, a YouTube channel, and honestly a whole personality, and good for her, because how many people on this earth can say it.

And the Chowder, for the Record

The Handlebar chowder earned the most Gordon-coded compliment in existence:

"Nicely seasoned, very tasty and perfect for a winter's day."

Nicely seasoned. From the napkin-spitter himself. Somewhere between that chowder and Momma Cherri's ribs lies the entire known universe of Gordon Ramsay being pleased on this show. Print it, frame it, it may never happen again.
