This category re-arrangement makes no sense.

Summary:

  • Fellow Travelers is a Showtime political thriller adapted from Thomas Mallon’s novel of the same name.
  • The story follows two lovers Hawk Fuller (Matt Bomer) and Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey ) through four decades, starting in the 50s.
  • Fellow Travelers and Matt Bomer have taken two Golden Globe nominations. Fans believe that Jonathan Bailey was snubbed due to changes in the category list.

Fortunately for the Golden Globes, this year's strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA unions did not affect the awards show like they did the Emmys in 2023. The strikes were over just in time for all the actors, directors, and average TV and movie fans to turn their attention to this year's nominees.

The 81 Golden Globes greeted viewers with the news of an expanded voting body, both in terms of gender and racial background. Not all the changes were so positive, however.

One category that did not see the light of day this year is Best Supporting Performance in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. If last year's supporting actors had the chance to compete in two separate categories, excluding Musical-Comedy or Drama, this year they were all combined back into one.

This, along with the overwhelmingly positive reception of HBO's Succession, resulted in little to no chance for limited series supporting actors to make the list of nominees. This change alone was the basis for many snubs.

Jonathan Bailey Golden Globes Snub

One of the most outstanding actors who didn't get his nomination this year is Jonathan Bailey. Last year, Bridgerton fans were devastated to not see his name in the Best Actor category, but this year's snub was even worse.

Jonathan Bailey's character in Fellow Travelers, Tim Laughlin, is as important to the show as Matt Bomer's Hawk Fuller. Both performances were unparalleled, but due to changes in the category list, Bailey couldn't make it.

On the bright side, his performance was recognized by Matt Bomer in response to his own nomination. The reaction was quoted by E! Online:

“I’m beyond thrilled and grateful that the show and everyone involved has been recognized for their hard work and dedication to this story. I still can’t believe we were able to get this show made, so it’s truly a dream to have it recognized in this way. I’d also like to say that any nomination for me is also a nomination for Jonathan Bailey – there is no Hawk without Tim.”

Luckily, the Golden Globes aren't the only award recognizing Fellow Travelers this year. The show, along with Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey, has already received three Critics Choice Award nominations and is now eligible for the next round of Emmys.

To see how the heartbreaking story of Hawk and Tim ends, tune in to Showtime on Friday, December 15.
