In fact, Saltburn was also partially inspired by this unhinged drama.

Summary:

  • The brand new Netflix series Ripley that stars Andrew Scott and was mainly inspired by 1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley’s novel adaptation is getting its official release on April 4.
  • The story initially comes from Patricia Highsmith’s famous crime novel that portrays the main character slowly trying to get rid of his friend’s family to eventually possess their wealth.
  • There’s nothing yet to say about the new series’s chances to compete with the 1999 film, but Andrew Scott’s interpretation may still bring something new to the famous story.

It seems like the era of psychological thrillers is in its prime — and many of them got their inspiration from already existing films that were released many years ago.

Now that Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn obsession period is possibly over, there’s another psychological roller coaster on its way — Netflix will soon drop Ripley, a limited series starring Andrew Scott.

The first sneak peek of the upcoming thriller series was given by Netflix earlier this month — the streaming service released the official trailer where Scott, mostly known to the audience as Jim Moriarty in the BBC’s series Sherlock also starring Benedict Cumberbatch, is giving some kind of deja-vu sense to the viewers as he appears to be as sinister as his feature character.

The eight-episode show is based on Patricia Highsmith’s famous crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley that in 1999 was turned into the film with the star-studded cast that includes Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman and many others.

The plot follows a young man called Tom Ripley who’s given money for talking a rich man’s dependent son Dickie into returning home from his protracted vacation in Italy and finally taking up some work.

Tom meets Dicky in Italy and, the closer friends they become, the more it dawns on Tom that he could have had the same prosperous life — and then this obsessive idea becomes the reason for making Dicky his living target.

Inspired by the same story, the stylish black-and-white limited series with Andrew Scott in the leading role will be released on Netflix on April 4. So far it’s hard to predict whether the new version will outshine the classic film starring Matt Damon, but it still may have all chances to become a new and refreshing interpretation of the very well-known creepy story.
