BookTok spent three years casting this show. Amazon finally agreed with half of the ballot.

The most fought-over casting in romantasy is settled. On October 15, 2026, Deadline and Variety reported that Prime Video's Fourth Wing has found its leads: Esther McGregor will play Violet Sorrengail and Emilio Sakraya will play Xaden Riorson in the adaptation of Rebecca Yarros' Empyrean novels. Amazon declined to comment, which in trade-speak means the deals are done and the press release is in the queue.

Sakraya is the pick fans made themselves. The 30-year-old Berlin-born actor built his career in Germany — the boxing drama Rheingold, Netflix's Tribes of Europa and 60 Minutes — before crossing over with Warrior Nun and Those About to Die. He recently wrapped a recurring role as rebel leader Koza in One Piece season 3.

For months he'd been posting workout videos captioned with a single dragon emoji, liking TikToks that decoded them, and generally conducting the least subtle audition campaign on the internet.

McGregor is the swing: the daughter of Ewan McGregor broke out as Mirren in Prime Video's We Were Liars, appeared in Babygirl, and is currently filming the streamer's Life Is Strange. But Violet's fancast ran toward Inde Navarrette and Mackenzie Foy, and X greeted the news with everything from delight to "this is so wrong it's crazy."

The author, notably, got the one thing she asked for. Yarros spent two years refusing to describe Xaden's appearance in interviews precisely so the role would stay open.

"We're just going to say he's POC."

What's actually been built here

  • The property: Fourth Wing (2023) launched the Empyrean series — three novels out, with Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, and five planned. Dragons, Basgiath War College, enemies-to-lovers. BookTok's defining franchise.
  • The deal: Amazon MGM bought rights in October 2023 with Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society; straight-to-series order came in May 2026.
  • The team: showrunner Meredith Averill (Locke & Key, The Haunting of Hill House), who replaced original showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett in September 2025. Lisa Joy directs the pilot and produces through Kilter Films with Jonathan Nolan.
  • The plan: one book per season, if the ratings cooperate. No filming date announced.

What's left is the part no casting can fix: the dragons. Violet's Tairn and Andarna have more dedicated fan accounts than most working actors, and a show whose leads were chosen this carefully will be judged, fairly or not, on rendering budgets.

Three years of development, one showrunner swap, zero frames shot — and the project's biggest casting risk was cleared by an author's one-line condition from 2023.

Sakraya survived BookTok's vetting. The VFX house goes next.
