The genre is extremely popular, with a lot of great projects that were made within it, so we selected five radically different TV shows for you to choose according to your taste.

Choosing the best of the best is highly subjective, so we tried a slightly different approach and chose five different sci-fi TV series that are each great in their own subgenre.

Babylon 5

In terms of "classic" sci-fi, we decided not to go with Star Trek, as this franchise is on a different level after so many years.

Babylon 5 also has great writing, well-developed characters, and well-written lore with politics, religion, war, philosophy, starship design, and more.

Some fans even call it the greatest sci-fi show of all time.

The Orville

Those looking for a more comedic take on the usual genre routine should check out this series.

While the first season was not well received, the second and third seasons were a vast improvement, both scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and ending up being some of the best sci-fi in recent years.

The X-Files

Sci-fi is not always about space travel and other planets, and for fans of thrillers, detectives, and even horror, The X-Files is a perfect choice.

With a more down-to-earth approach, this series about two FBI agents solving all sorts of mysteries involving aliens, mutants, serial killers, and many other cases has definitely earned its iconic status.

Altered Carbon

If you love the cyberpunk genre with its "high tech-low life" aesthetic, this is a show to check out.

Set in a world where the human mind is kept on an implant that allows people to change their bodies and live forever, the first season delivers an exciting and complete detective story in classic cyberpunk fashion.

You might want to ignore the second season, though, as fans say it is a massive downgrade from the first.

Firefly

The space western is a rather rare subgenre, and Firefly is a great example of it.

Even though it only has one season, the story about a crew of misfits roaming the galaxy is really fun and has great chemistry between the memorable characters. And it wraps up nicely with a full-length feature film, Serenity (2005).
