It might sound weird, but George Martin still had more mercy than the show’s creators.

Despite coming to its end roughly 6 years ago, Game of Thrones isn’t really over yet, as A Song of Ice and Fire’s author George Martin keeps his hope for finishing the book series with the two remaining chapters.

The upcoming book titled The Winds of Winter has no release date whatsoever, but Martin has already made several major promises for his fans that have been patient enough to wait for 15 years and counting.

However, the show’s lovers also might want to check the book out once it’s released, as, according to the author, he’s planning to make another major character rise up from the dead.

George Martin Had a Fight With Game of Thrones Creators Over Rickon Stark’s Arc

Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and Dan Weiss have been the primary target for the series’ fans throughout the years, since they were the ones in charge of major plot changes that didn’t make much sense after all.

Despite that, the creators had their own vision of how exactly the show would work, so they continued with even more atrocious decisions, coming up with an idea to remove Rickon Stark from Game of Thrones completely.

In A Song of Ice and Fire, Rickon is Catelyn and Eddard Stark’s youngest child whose fate remains unknown after he leaves for the Last Hearth with Osha and his direwolf, Shaggydog. However, in Game of Thrones’ season 6 he’s killed during the Battle of the Bastards.

Still, even this wouldn’t have been Rickon’s case if it hadn’t been for Martin himself, starting a fight with Benioff and Weiss who wanted to write the character off the entire plot line.

“The biggest thing was Dan and David called me up and had the idea of eliminating Rickon, the youngest of the Stark children, because he didn’t do much in the first book. I said I had important plans for him, so they kept him”, the author revealed in an interview for James Hibberd’s Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon.

George Martin’s Revelation Is an Exciting Update for Rickon’s Story in The Winds of Winter

Since the author made it clear that he had an intention to keep the character in the show no matter what and at least for a while, it’s fair to say Rickon now has high chances to become a key figure in A Song of Ice and Fire’s next instalment.

Though Game of Thrones ends with Bran becoming King of Westeros, in Martin’s books there’s still a lot to happen before the final outcome, and Rickon, considering that he’s well and alive, might be considered another heir of the House Stark.
