“Just finish the damn book, George,” they said. Well, be careful what you wish for.

Summary:

  • Recently, a Spanish satirical newspaper announced that George Martin “finally finished the next installment of The Secret of Puente Viejo.”
  • The Secret of Puente Viejo is a Spanish TV show that has no connection to the A Song of Ice and Fire author.
  • Despite the clearly satirical nature of the news piece, hundreds of fans are genuinely pissed off, taking the announcement at face value.

George Martin is world-famous for two things: creating the grandest realistic-dark fantasy universe and stalling for over a dozen years to publish his next book. An entire TV show based on his series has started and ended in the time that’s passed since the last A Song of Ice and Fire book, but the author has been in no rush at all.

The situation doesn’t get any better when fake news decides to hype on that.

‘New GRRM Book’ Announcement Trolled Fans

If you’ve been following GRRM’s notorious book-writing misadventures for at least a few years now, you most likely already know the catch. There are quite a few to choose from, really: most often, Martin finishes a completely different project no one has asked for, but this time around, it’s different — fake news caught fans off guard.

El Mundo Today, a popular Spanish satirical newspaper, recently announced that George Martin has “finally finished the next installment of The Secret of Puente Viejo.” With many English-speaking fans not aware of the newspaper’s nature, many reacted to the news in the most hilarious way: they took the announcement seriously.

George Martin Fans Are Genuinely Frustrated

Let’s set the context straight first: El secreto de Puente Viejo is a popular Spanish TV show George Martin has nothing to do with. But the author’s notoriety led many fans to believe that — once again — GRRM has been working on something completely unrelated to the A Song of Ice and Fire’s main continuity and were triggered. Again.

“Seriously, can he just finishing writing the motherf*cking book series already? This is out of hand. If you don’t give enough of a sh*t to make deadlines, then just hand it off to a ghost writer because an actual ending is better than no ending,” Reddit user MoistWetSponge wrote in the comment section.

What we loved the most about this whole situation is that there are hundreds of comments like this, with people being genuinely pissed off at the satiric piece without realizing its nature. One would guess that seeing the news of George Martin’s “new book” in only one source would give the trolls away, but nope.

Well, it’s high time to sit back, relax, grab a warm cup of tea, and watch A Song of Ice and Fire fans fight over George Martin’s non-existent new book… Once again.

Is such fake news funny?
