Nothing in this show happened “just because.”

Grey's Anatomy is one of those shows that gets a lot of hate online but remains incredibly popular with the general public. Times change, and almost 20 years later, the show is nothing like it was in the beginning, but even those fans who don't like all the changes still stick around to see what's next for Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

While the quality of the recent storylines and some of the character development decisions are questionable, there's no denying the excitement and amount of drama that comes with each episode. You can never guess what will happen next unless you pay close attention to Shonda Rhimes' little clues.

It turns out that the medical specialties of some of the characters have been such clues all along. Or at least the fandom convinced itself that they were.

Amelia Shepherd, for example, is a very talented neurosurgeon who eventually becomes the head of neurosurgery. But along the way, viewers find out that she herself has a brain tumor that needs medical attention. But what's more interesting is that it's not just Amelia whose story reads from her specialty.

Addison Montgomery, the gynecologist who can't get pregnant, and Arizona Robbins, who works as a pediatric surgeon but loses her own marriage because of a child, are other very solid examples. Even Derek Shepherd's death from not getting a CT scan is believed by many to be related to the fact that he is also a top neurosurgeon.

Of course, it is possible that all of the above arcs and events in the characters' lives just happen to coincide with whatever they choose to focus on in medicine. But it's hard to believe that coincidence is allowed in Shondaland.

The majority of fans see the sad irony in most of this, so maybe you'll see it too if you keep these facts in mind during your next rewatch.

You can rewatch Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Plus. The show is also renewed for its 20th anniversary season, however, there is no information on when the production will begin. Make sure to keep an eye out for all the news and updates.
