Guy Ritchie’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Actor Doesn’t Lose Hope For Third Movie: “The Appetite Is Huge For It”

Another sequel for Robert Downey Jr.’s beloved detective drama has been stuck in development hell for more than a decade, and Jared Harris’ recent update on the matter is bad news for Guy Ritchie’s fans — here’s what the actor said.
While Guy Ritchie is booked and busy with more gangster-themed movies and shows in development, fans are most desperate about the director’s long-forgotten franchise.
Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, a 2009 movie Sherlock Holmes remains one of Ritchie’s major hits to this day with a box office gross of $524 million against the initial budget of $90 million.
Despite the movie’s sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, performing slightly worse, things did look promising for Sherlock Holmes 3 at some point, though there was no significant update ever since the second film was released back in 2011.
Now that it might take some more years for the long-awaited movie to come, Sherlock Holmes’ actor weighed in on such a possibility — and things do look even more complicated now.
Jared Harris Has “No Clue” About ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ — But Thinks It “Has to Be Made”
The actor, who in the sequel portrayed the main antagonist James Moriarty, has recently addressed the long-burning matter, saying that, despite not knowing anything about the progress on the potential film, keeps hope that sooner or later Sherlock Holmes 3 will finally be out.
“I have no idea. No one's talking to me about it. And I really wish people would stop asking me... It should be on there. I mean, no one's talking to me about it. I have no clue”, the actor revealed in an interview with The Direct.
He also added that the franchise’s third part was initially set to be released around Christmas of 2020 when the pandemic thwarted that plan too, but that shouldn’t be a reason to shelf the project for good, suggesting that “it has to be made”.
“It’s one of those cruel twists of fate, where the pandemic hit and that scattered people around the world to the wind. But I know that the appetite is huge for it, and I’m sure there are other people acutely aware of that as well. But I believe it should be because it’s brilliant. I very much hope so”, Harris stated.
In the Meantime, Guy Ritchie Is Developing Another Sherlock Holmes Story
The director might not be very interested in giving Robert Downey Jr.’s character a continuation right now, but he’s definitely into trying to twist Conan Doyle’s famous detective story in a different form.
It was revealed last year that Ritchie started developing another murder mystery show titled Young Sherlock and set to be released on Prime Video sometime in the future.
Starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin, the series will follow 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes as he discovers his unique detective talent while studying at Oxford University where a mysterious murder shakes the entire community.
