'Harry Potter' Parallel Discovered in 'Wednesday': Will the Headmaster Change Every Year?

Tim Burton’s show might be building a pattern in its second season, and Steve Buscemi’s character will likely be affected.
Netflix’s horror-ish drama series Wednesday isn’t done with its second season, but some fans might already know which character will be out by the time the finale is dropped.
Released around a week ago, the first half of the second season follows Wednesday as she goes back to Nevermore after an epic battle that unveiled some major characters’ hidden intentions.
One of those is Marilyn Thornhill aka Laurel Gates, a botany teacher who ends up killing Gwendoline Christie’s Nevermore Academy principal Larissa Weems.
Now that the latter is replaced by Steve Buscemi’s Barry Dort, some fans feel like Wednesday might be borrowing this idea from the Harry Potter franchise.
‘Wednesday’ Fans Think Every Season Will Feature a New Principal
While Christie’s character was never a villain, but still got killed off in the first season’s finale, the dynamics that Buscemi’s Principal Dort is showing might be leading him to a gruesome end sometime in the second instalment’s final episode — and this will draw a direct parallel with the Harry Potter universe.
“Just like Harry Potter changed professor of the dark arts each year, I feel like Wednesday is going to kill off the principal each year based on who was cast this season”, Redditor lukemitchellfav suggested in a thread.
“I would not be surprised if that happens honestly. Weems was clearly gonna die, the current principal is an antagonist so he's not gonna stick around for long, so we will almost certainly get a new principal come next season”, AnyIndustry3191 agreed.
Steve Buscemi Says a Gift From Tim Burton Inspired His ‘Wednesday’ Character
Now that there’s a new major figure in the gothic Nevermore Academy, Wednesday’s director Tim Burton thought the character should be meaningful to the place, and it’s not only about Principal Dort’s omnipresent positivity when he’s at school.
As Steve Buscemi revealed ahead of the release of the second season’s first four episodes on August 6, he and Burton agreed to get some inspiration for Dort from Edgar Allan Poe, a famous poet whose poem “The Raven” repeats the word “nevermore” multiple times.
“He also gave me an Edgar Allan Poe action figure, and I think it was from his own collection because it wasn't brand new. It was like, 'Oh my god, he gave me one of his possessions’”, Buscemi added during an interview with People.
Meanwhile, Wednesday’s season 2 volume 2 is now set to arrive on Netflix on September 3.
