A thread told two of the best actresses of their generation to fire their representation. The replies ended up indicting something much bigger than CAA.

The premise of the r/movies thread is in its title: Amy Adams and Jessica Chastain "need new agents." The evidence for the prosecution is real enough. Adams' most recent premiere, Kornél Mundruczó's At the Sea, landed at the Berlinale in February with a Golden Bear nomination and a 38% Rotten Tomatoes score, and still has no announced US release. Chastain's year is somehow rougher: her Apple series The Savant was pulled three days before its September 2025 premiere and has still not aired — she said publicly she was "not aligned" with the decision — and Other Mommy, which opened October 9, drew early reactions calling it her worst movie in years.

The thread's own top replies, though, don't actually support the title:

"They're also running into the curse of being 50-year-old women in Hollywood, where there are no stories about 50-year-old women."

— a commenter on r/movies

"Nicole Kidman has shown if you want to be in those movies, you need to also produce those movies. Or be Judi Dench, both of which are difficult."

— a commenter on r/movies

The numbers side with the commenters. Adams is 52 and Chastain is 49; between them they hold nine Oscar nominations and one win, and both were carrying prestige studio projects as recently as the early 2020s. No agent negotiates a client out of an age bracket the industry has stopped writing for — the scripts Adams was offered at 35 are now being offered to actresses who are 35.

The Kidman playbook, specifically

The comparison the thread reaches for is instructive because it's concrete. Kidman, 59, didn't out-audition the problem — she bought her way around it through Blossom Films, producing Big Little Lies, The Undoing, Nine Perfect Strangers, Expats, and The Perfect Couple, and taking Babygirl to Venice as a producer-star at 57. The roles exist because she commissioned them.

Both women have visibly read the same memo, just later. Chastain's Freckle Films produced The Eyes of Tammy Faye — the one that won her the Oscar — and The 355, while Adams' Bond Group has been attached to adaptations for years, including Nightbitch. The difference is pipeline volume: Kidman turned producing into a second full-time career with a dozen shows in rotation, while Adams and Chastain have treated it as an occasional tool.

The thread's verdict on the agents, and the replies' verdict on the industry, describe the same five years — only one of them explains why it's happening to both actresses at once.

Two careers hitting identical turbulence at the identical age isn't a representation problem; it's a market description. The fix the thread proposes costs a phone call, and the fix that actually works costs years of development slates — which is exactly why the women who've solved it, Kidman included, all solved it the expensive way.
