You can't recast a ghost. You can, apparently, schedule one.

Monica Dutton has been dead since the first hour of Marshals — killed offscreen, by cancer, between the Yellowstone finale and the spinoff's March 1 premiere. Kelsey Asbille never filmed a frame; scheduling conflicts made her unavailable, and showrunner Spencer Hudnut has said her unavailability is what clarified Kayce's entire arc for the series.

The grief was real on both sides of the camera. Luke Grimes personally broke the news to Asbille that her character was being written out, and has called himself heartbroken over it. Brecken Merrill, who played Tate opposite her for six seasons of Yellowstone, told People he was simply sad she couldn't make it to the show.

And yet the door has never been closed — because Hudnut named the mechanism the week the series premiered. Asbille gave the production permission to use her image in episode 1, and the showrunner told TVLine a return in hallucination or flashback form was possible.

"I don't want to guarantee anything, but it's definitely not off the table."

— Spencer Hudnut, to TVLine, March 2026

Nineteen months later, at the season 2 premiere event in Las Vegas, he went further with People: he's definitely open to it, and of Asbille specifically — "I would love to work with her." His only caveats are that he has no existing relationship with the actress and that the timing would have to be right.

The show, meanwhile, keeps arguing for it onscreen. This week's "Falling Sky" is practically a Monica episode without Monica: Tate invokes her twice, and every parenting decision Kayce makes is measured against what she would have wanted. Grimes has even told The Hollywood Reporter that if the series flashes back to anyone from Kayce's past, he'd rather it be Monica than John Dutton.

The character has been dead for two seasons. She still gets more lines of dialogue about her than half the living cast.

Nobody is promising a cameo, and nobody should expect a series-regular resurrection. But between a showrunner naming the exact device, a co-star lobbying in the trades, and scripts that won't stop talking about her, the question has quietly shifted from whether to when Asbille's calendar allows.
