Best friends turned mortal enemies will face each other again.

Summary

  • The first season of House of Dragon ended with the failure of peace negotiations and the subsequent coronation of Aegon II, sparking a civil war.
  • The events of Season 2, scheduled for release in 2024, will pick up where Season 1 left off.
  • According to recently leaked spoilers, the season finale will once again pit Alicent and Rhaenyra against each other.

Though Game of Thrones ended four years ago, bringing the Targaryen reign to an end with the death of Daenerys, the history of Westeros and Essos spans millennia, with the last three centuries including not a few intrigues and civil wars centered around the royal Valyrian family. Thus, House of the Dragon, a prequel to GoT based on the fictionalized historical chronicle Fire & Blood, recounts the equally bloody strife that erupted in the lands of Westeros two centuries before the main events.

After the failed finale of GoT, the prequel spinoff surprised fans of the fantasy franchise by being incredibly successful, intriguing, and spectacular. The show's value has proven to be no less than GoT's, as much attention is paid to female characters, including the main players in the political confrontation between the Blacks and Greens, Aegon's mother Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen. And while the second season is still some time away, insiders have already managed to find out details about their next fateful meeting.

Some Thrilling Spoilers Leaked

While HBO hasn't released any information, Martin himself, who serves as a consultant, supervisor and executive producer on the series, has opened up on his personal blog about how House of the Dragon will consist of multiple seasons.

'It is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish,' the author wrote.

So the culmination of the terrible civil war, called the Dance of the Dragons, can only take place in the next seasons, while the second one will be dedicated to the beginning of the war after the coronation of Aegon II. Still, there will be a lot of bloodshed at the very beginning, especially as a result of the so-called Fall of King's Landing.

However, the full-scale conflict will be preceded by a peace proposal from Alicent, who will suggest to her former friend Rhaenyra that the Seven Kingdoms be divided into spheres of influence between two monarchs, Aegon and Rhaenyra herself. This seems to be what will be revealed in the Season 2 finale, if rumors are to be believed.

According to the Twitter account Wake the Dragons, which is dedicated to providing plot analysis and insider information about the series, the final eighth episode of Season 2 will once again pit the two powerful women against each other on the grounds of Dragonstone Castle.

In particular, this will mirror their previous meeting in the eighth episode of the first season, as well as the peace offering brought by Ser Otto Hightower in the finale.

When Will the Second Season of House of the Dragon Be Released?

While most American TV series, including HBO's, have been delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that suddenly broke out this year and only recently ended, House of the Dragon managed to avoid the same fate. According to co-executive producer and co-screenwriter Sara Hess, the script for the upcoming second season was completed in December 2022. The actors' strike also had no effect on the production, as the cast is largely made up of British actors who are members of a separate union, Equity. Thus, the filming of the new season was completed without interruption from April to September 2023.

As for the release date, Season 2, which despite Martin's words will consist of 8 episodes instead of 10, is scheduled for mid-2024.
