House of the Dragon Showrunner Gives a Major Update Ahead of Season 3 Production Start

The show’s next season might bring along all the epic we anticipated for years.
House of the Dragon ’s quite uneventful season 2 was one of the biggest TV disappointments last year, but things seem to be moving forward ahead of the next instalment’s filming start.
The series is now very much expected to make it up to previous failures by bringing to the screens at least some of the most important battles from George Martin ’s Fire & Blood, setting the Greens and the Blacks against each other and introducing some of both teams’ new allies.
The second instalment didn’t reach the breaking point, but came as close to it as it ever could, and House of the Dragon’s showrunner’s recent revelations might in fact be another proof of it.
House of the Dragon’s Showrunner Teases “Major New Characters” in Season 3
Now that the series is getting things ready for filming the next season, Ryan Condal, who serves as House of the Dragon’s showrunner, revealed in an interview with Gold Derby that the team had already wrapped scriptwriting up and is about to go forward with full-mode production in a couple of weeks.
Condal also reflected on writing becoming a much easier task by season 3 since “you get to know everybody really well”.
“For Season 3, there's much more shape and depth to it right out of the gate, because you're writing for people you know. There are some major new characters this season, but 85 percent of them, we already knew who they were, and it just makes it much more rewarding to write”, he added, hinting at a possibility of the storyline going way beyond by introducing new figures in long-awaited events.
However, he rushed in to not reassure fans about some major changes in Rhaenyra’s character as Emma D'Arcy had previously revealed they’d be participating in action scenes. Talking about the matter, Condal stated that in this regard the team is “on very, very shaky ground”.
Rhaenyra Becoming a Warrior Will Help House of the Dragon Remain Faithful to Fire & Blood
Despite the TV character and her book version already having some major differences, Rhaenyra’s big change in House of the Dragon’s season 3 might finally make it up for writers' previous mistakes regarding the character.
Having remained nothing but quite an inactive ruler within her castle’s walls, Rhaenyra will have a key role in the Battle of the Gullet during which she will make an attempt to take King's Landing over.
Considering that the Battle of the Gullet is very likely to give a blasting start to the upcoming third season, we may also expect to see Rhaenyra in a new position of power.
The new episodes will most likely arrive on Max sometime in summer of 2026.
