This is the story of a network taking one of its most-watched dramas out back and ending it at the height of its powers — and then, for years now, declining to explain itself to anyone. Including its own leading man.

The goodbye was enormous

Start with the insulting part. The series finale, "End of Tour," pulled 6.7 million live viewers — the show's biggest nightly audience of its entire final season — and once a week of delayed viewing was counted, the total was projected to land around 11.4 million. On a Friday. The time slot where broadcast shows are sent to die politely produced numbers most networks would sacrifice an executive for.

A show canceled for no stated reason went out with a season-high audience of roughly 11 million people. Sit with that.

CBS announced the ending back in November 2023, right after the strikes, with the cast reportedly taking pay cuts just to get that final season made. The network never followed up with anything resembling a real "why."

Ask Tom Selleck how he feels about it

The mustache has not made peace, and honestly, why should he. Selleck has said he never got a straight answer out of the network either.

"Nobody wanted it to end," Selleck said, adding that "the show wasn't tired, it wasn't anything else." As for CBS's reasoning: "I haven't had a good answer yet."

Same, Tom. Same.

Fourteen. And the shape of the run makes the whole thing stranger:

• 14 seasons, September 2010 through December 2024 — one family dinner table that outlasted three presidencies and a pandemic
• 293 episodes, nearly all of them ending in a Reagan family dinner
• The finale, "End of Tour," aired Friday, December 13, 2024
• Not a single one of those seasons was a flop

Fourteen seasons of appointment television, and the last thing anyone saw was a ratings spike. That's not a show dying of natural causes. That's a whodunit.

The part where nobody actually leaves

And here's the punchline: two months after burying the show, CBS ordered Boston Blue, which ships Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan off to Massachusetts and has already had Bridget Moynahan and Marisa Ramirez drop by. Season 2 premieres Friday, October 9 — Blue Bloods' old night, naturally.

So: fourteen seasons, eleven million goodbye viewers, zero explanations, and a franchise that's still very much collecting a paycheck. The Reagans would call that a case worth reopening.
