Sunrise on the Reaping’s movie adaptation is about to dive deep into the story of Woody Harrelson’s character who became the Hunger Games’ winner at a pretty young age — here’s how old Haymitch was when the 50th and 74th Hunger Games occurred.
The Hunger Games ’ new prequel titled Sunrise on the Reaping will now take a closer look at Katniss Everdeen’s mentor Haymitch Abernathy, explaining his own role in a major rebellion against the Capitol and President Snow.
Set 24 years earlier than the original movie series, the upcoming film will see how Haymitch got to be the second Quarter Quell’s winner, later on witnessing Katniss winning the third Quarter Quell 25 years later.
However, Haymitch’s story intertwines with Katniss’ in more than just one way, including the age they both won the Hunger Games at.
Haymitch’s Backstory in The Hunger Games, Explained
Before being reaped for the 50th Hunger Games, Haymitch lived in District 12 with his mother Willamae and younger brother Sid; his father died in a coal mine fire when Haymitch was little.
Born on July 4, the day of the annual reaping, Haymitch had to go through the same birthday procedure of praying to not be chosen as a tribute, but things played out differently when he was picked from the crowd after the chosen tribute made an attempt to run away and was shot.
By the time Haymitch became the official new tribute from District 12, he was 16 years old.
How Old Is Haymitch in the Original Hunger Games Movies?
Since 24 years have passed between the 50th and the 74th Hunger Games, which saw Katniss Everdeen volunteering as a tribute, Haymitch was 40 years old by the time he became Katniss and Peeta’s mentor.
It’s fair to say Haymitch and Katniss’ storylines had way more in common than just their presence at the 74th Hunger Games: both won the bloody competition at the age of 16; what’s more, Haymitch even used to be a good friend of Burdock Everdeen, Katniss and Primrose’s father who, just like Haymitch’s dad, died in a mine explosion five years prior to the 74th Hunger Games.

The movie is now set to arrive in theatres worldwide on November 20, 2026.
According to Deadline’s reports, Joseph Zada has been recently cast as young Haymitch, also joined by Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird and Jesse Plemons as young Plutarch Heavensbee.
