How old is Jason in Crystal Lake? Peacock shaved more than a decade off the Friday the 13th timeline
Crystal Lake gives two different answers to how old Jason Voorhees is, and only one of them is a number.
The series is A24's Friday the 13th prequel for Peacock, and all eight episodes arrived on October 15. Brad Caleb Kane runs it; he took over in 2024 after original showrunner Bryan Fuller was let go. Linda Cardellini plays Pamela Voorhees, the camp cook who becomes the killer of the 1980 film, and 12-year-old Callum Vinson plays her son. Most of the season takes place in 1972, eight years before the events of the original movie.
The number: 11
Jason is 11 when he drowns in Crystal Lake in the summer of 1971. The series picks up about a year later, with Pamela still raw from it, which puts his birth around 1960.
The movies told it differently. Going by the franchise's established dates, Jason was born in 1946 and drowned in 1957, also at 11. Same age, same lake, 14 years apart. Here's how the two timelines line up:
- Jason born — 1946 in the films, about 1960 in Crystal Lake.
- Jason drowns — 1957 in the films, summer 1971 in the series.
- Barry and Claudette killed — in 1958, by Pamela, in the original's opening scene. In the series they're counselors in 1972, and it's Grace, played by Gwendolyn Sundstrom, who kills them after unknowingly taking acid.
- Pamela's grief before the 1980 film — more than two decades in the films, under a decade in the series.
That last line is the reason for the whole change. In the original timeline, Pamela waits more than 20 years before she starts killing, and the series wanted her loss to still be fresh.
"For TV, I wanted that grief to be much more immediate," Kane told TV Guide.
The 1970s setting also brings in characters from the 1980 film, like Crazy Ralph and Deputy Dorf, years before audiences first met them.
The other answer: his body
By the end of the season, Jason is still about 12 years old on paper. He just doesn't look it.

The penultimate episode reveals why he survived the lake. His father, Elias Wittering, played by Hamish Linklater, works for a company called Bellflower on a secret program called Project Argonaut, built to produce a human who can survive the threats of the nuclear age, drowning included. Jason was the program's first real success. In the finale, "The Final Chapter," he comes back grown, with a burlap sack over his head and a single eyehole, the look of Friday the 13th Part 2. Pamela's reaction is a stunned "You're so big." Zachary Branch plays the grown Jason, and Vinson plays the boy.
On paper, Jason is barely older than the actor who plays him as a child. On screen, he's already the man from Part 2.
What the new dates do to the movies
If you carry the series' dates forward, Jason is a lot younger in the films than the old timeline made him:
- In the 1980 original — about 20, instead of his mid-30s.
- In Part 2, set five years later — about 25, instead of nearly 40.
It also changes how the original ends. The 1980 film closes with a small boy bursting out of the lake to drag Alice under. If Jason is already a grown man walking the woods by 1972, that boy can only be a nightmare, which is how fans have long explained the scene anyway. Kane sees the change as a repair rather than a problem.
"It helps make the 1980 movie make sense a little bit better," Kane told Soundsphere.
For the record: Crystal Lake shot part of its season at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Blairstown, New Jersey, the same camp the 1980 film used.
