The actor nearly gave up on Hollywood — until one script changed everything.

At the height of his early fame in the 1990s, Brad Pitt wasn’t exactly basking in the Hollywood glow. In a recent episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, the actor opened up about a deeply disorienting period in his life — specifically the summer of 1994. Despite his rising star power, Pitt described himself as drifting through a haze of blockbuster fatigue and personal detachment. "I would wake up, get a bong load, have four Coca-Colas on ice, no food," he said. Not exactly the glamorous movie-star lifestyle, is it?

"I was just trying to figure out, 'What do I do next?'" Pitt recalled. What came next, as it turns out, would become a career-defining role. Enter Se7en. The dark, cerebral thriller wasn’t an obvious feel-good project, and at first, Pitt was sceptical. "I read the first seven pages," he said, "and I call [my manager], like, 'Are you kidding me?'" But Cynthia Pett-Dante, his longtime friend and manager, urged him to read on. And then came the meeting with David Fincher — one of those rare conversations that changes the course of a career.

Fincher didn’t just pitch a film; he spoke about cinema with such passion and intelligence that something stirred in Pitt: "He was just talking about films like I’d never heard anyone speak about film," the actor said. "I just got the jones back." That spark — equal parts curiosity and creative hunger — reignited his commitment to acting. Sometimes, all it takes is the right script, the right director, and the right moment of doubt to bring someone back to themselves, don’t you think?

Se7en, released in 1995, would go on to become one of the most iconic films of the decade — grim, gripping, and unlike anything else Pitt had done before. And to think, it arrived just in time to stop him from walking away entirely. Funny how the darkest stories can lead to a personal renaissance. Would Brad Pitt still be Brad Pitt without Se7en? Hard to say. But we’re glad he finished those first seven pages. Aren’t you?
