I Just Watched ‘Guns Up’ and Here’s What I Have to Say

Guns Up is the exact case when expectation-reality finally worked for the better. Don’t miss the chance to catch it in theaters — here's why.
It was a boring evening when I was finally free from work and had a couple of hours for myself, so I decided to go to the movies. I needed to watch something fun and easy, so when I saw the poster of Guns Up with Kevin James on it, seconds after the ticket was already in my hands.
The movie is directed by Edward Drake, and it didn’t have a captivating synopsis. It was something about an ex-cop a.k.a devoted father leading double life working for the mobsters, when suddenly something goes off the rails and demands him to put his family in danger. Sounds like any other action-thriller, right?
The role of Ray Hayes, the ex-cop, is played by Kevin James, as predicted, but when the movie started I was absolutely thrilled to see Christina Ricci playing his wife Alice. They also have two kids, annoying at first, but really cool towards the end of the movie.
Why Is ‘Guns Up’ Better Than a Typical Kevin James Action?
The first half of the movie is interesting, but I can’t say that it was what I expected. There were laughs, but the story got serious pretty fast. So, really not a comedy.
But the most interesting part was when it was finally revealed that Alice, played by Ricci, has many secrets from the past, and is a better mobster than her husband.
The scene where Ray realizes that is amazing, both funny and hard to swallow. But when you see Ricci in action, killing bad guys one after another, it takes your breath away. Really, the actress is just born to play complicated antiheroes!
Another great thing was the endless devotion among the Hayes family members. The kids were absolutely scared when they found out about the work their father does, but after realizing that everything was ever done for the sake of the family, they wash away any judgment and stand right next to their parents.
