Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners becoming an anthology? Season 2 fans hope Netflix keeps going
The sequel swapped out its beloved dead protagonist for a brand-new crew. Fans' response has been to start planning seasons that don't exist.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 landed on Netflix on October 20 — ten episodes, Studio Trigger again, and a completely new story in Night City. David Martinez's crew is gone; the new season follows Roman Carax, a young cinephile documenting the city's unfiltered stories, alongside Maelstrom recruit Talia Yang, faded veteran edgerunner Weak Kingsley, and a nomad netrunner called D out for revenge.
That swap was the plan from the start. CD Projekt Red said back in October 2022 that any continuation would be "something completely different" rather than a resurrection, and the returning team — director Kai Ikarashi, showrunner Bartosz Sztybor — built exactly that, pitching the season on 90s-film energy closer to Pulp Fiction and Léon than to a sequel.
The fans got there before Netflix did
The striking thing is happening under Netflix's own promo videos, where viewers who just finished the season are already drafting the franchise's future in the comments:
"Hear me out, 4 seasons of cyberpunk. Season 3 follows a random group again and season 4 does the same but Romen is in it though older so we get a slight follow up on his story without it being the main focus of another season."

That's a fan asking for less of a character they like, so the format survives. The rest of the comment section is in binge mode ("Binged the whole thing yesterday. What a masterpiece"), and the recurring request isn't bring David back — it's do this again, with strangers.

My position: the anthology is the best possible future for this franchise, and season 2 just proved the concept. Night City is the actual protagonist, every crew is disposable by design — that's what the word edgerunner means in-universe — and an anthology lets each season end as brutally as the first one did without writing the show into a corner.
Season 1 ended with its hero dead and its story closed. The sequel outlived him anyway — with a cast of strangers.
What a season 3 has going for it
Netflix hasn't announced anything, but the machinery around the show argues for continuing. Season 1 won Crunchyroll's Anime of the Year and famously sent Cyberpunk 2077 back up the sales charts in 2022; this time CDPR synchronized again, shipping the game's update 2.5 on premiere day. As long as each season doubles as the best marketing the game can buy, the co-production math works before a single Netflix metric comes in.

So the bet on the table is whether Netflix formalizes what fans are already treating as settled. The audience isn't asking whether the show works without David anymore — they're asking which strangers they get next.
