No novel, no article, no podcast. The source material is a script that Hollywood's own executives voted the best unproduced screenplay of the year — and that's where the story gets uncomfortable.

One Night Only is not based on a book. It's an original screenplay by Travis Braun, and the "ranked #1" part is literal: Braun's script topped the 2024 Black List, the annual survey in which hundreds of film executives vote for the best screenplays floating around Hollywood that nobody has produced yet. The list was celebrating its 20th anniversary; past #1s and alumni include Argo, Spotlight, and Promising Young Woman.

The premise that won the vote is high-concept dystopian rom-com: premarital sex is illegal in America except for one 12-hour night a year, tracked by government-issued wrist tattoos. Owen (Callum Turner) plans to propose on exemption night until his girlfriend announces other plans; Allie (Monica Barbaro) is looking for something real in a night built for the opposite. Universal put Will Gluck (Easy A, Anyone But You) on it in February 2025, surrounded the leads with Maya Hawke, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton, and released it on August 7, 2026.

What happened between #1 and the screen

Here's the uncomfortable part, and Gluck said it himself, on the record, to Deadline:

"I always rewrite the script completely once I have the actors."

— Will Gluck, to Deadline

So the screenplay that several hundred executives ranked above every other unproduced script in Hollywood was rewritten top to bottom by its director, who among other changes turned Barbaro's character into a singer. Then the premise itself went under the knife: Gluck cut nearly all the sex and nudity in editing after test audiences reacted badly, saying it distracted from the love story — in a movie whose entire concept is the one legal night of sex.

The result opened to $5.5 million on a $25 million budget, reached only about $11.5 million domestic in a month, and sits at 43% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 42 on Metacritic. The Ringer's Adam Nayman wrote that the film "operates precisely and obliviously as the punch line to its own cautionary tale."

Executives voted Braun's script the best unproduced screenplay of 2024. The version that reached theaters was the director's rewrite, with the premise's defining content cut after test screenings.

What the ranking actually measures

None of this makes the Black List a scam; it makes it a snapshot. The list honors scripts as written, and One Night Only as written is the thing people loved — audiences just never got to see that version. Braun will be fine either way: a #1 Black List credit opens doors regardless of the box office, and the produced film's failure is now a case study executives will argue about at the exact parties where the next list gets voted on.
