If there's one thing the Internet has no shortage of, it's outlandish fan theories. And one such theory that pops up from time to time is that the Night King of Game of Thrones is a Targaryen.

Well, on some level it makes a little sense.

If only because the Targaryen dynasty has been responsible for so many of the disasters that have befallen Westeros.

Maybe they had something to do with the worst of them, the Long Night?

Well, no. No matter how you look at it, there is no way that the Night King could be a Targaryen, either one of the House of the Dragon characters or any other representative of the family.

In Game of Thrones, the Night King and his White Walkers were undead warriors created by the Children of the Forest as a weapon against the First Men, but they turned on their creators and decided to destroy all life forever. Their mere approach brought blizzard and winter, and the aforementioned Long Night.

In George Martin 's books, the nature of the Night King is quite different. He's not the leader of the White Walkers, but a legendary historical figure of the First Men, one of the earliest commanders of the Night's Watch, who supposedly betrayed his vows to marry a "corpse queen" and crown himself king.

What do these two versions of the character have in common? They both existed long before the Targaryen dynasty, or the Targaryen family, or the rest of Valyria with its ancient families of dragonriders.

The chronology of the distant past is implied to be unreliable in the books and not elaborated on in Game of Thrones, but the Night King probably predates the Targaryens by several thousand years. In fact, he almost certainly predates not only the hatching of the first Valyrian dragon, but the beginning of written history. The show version is probably older than the very concept of noble houses among humans!

So it is theoretically possible, at least in the context of the show, that one of the Night King's White Walker underlings could be a former Targaryen – and even that requires some extremely far-fetched theorizing. But certainly not the Night King himself.
