Here’s why your pet doesn’t wake up for 16 hours straight and when it can be an alarming signal.

If you’ve ever felt jealous of your cat spending the entire day sleeping while you have to work, you aren't alone. According to animal experts, an adult cat sleeps 12 to 16 hours a day, while kittens and seniors can spend 80% of their time resting. To some it might look like laziness, but scientists explain that it is actually a sophisticated biological strategy.

Why Do Cats Sleep So Much?

Even though your cat’s "prey" is likely just a toy, their bodies are naturally prepared for the wild. Cats are sprinters, not marathon runners. In nature, hunting requires explosive bursts of energy. To prepare, the feline body enters "eco-mode" to conserve resources. Long periods of rest are actually their way to recharge the battery for the next "hunt."

Apart from that, cats are polyphasic sleepers, resting in short bursts rather than one long block. They alternate between light dozing and deep sleep, allowing them to be fully alert the second they hear a sudden noise. While many cats adapt to their owner’s schedule, their internal clock still triggers those famous bursts of energy at dawn and dusk.

When Can Your Cat's Sleeping Schedule Signal Problems?

Veterinarians warn that while heavy sleep is normal, a sudden change in the pattern is a red flag. If your cat sleeps significantly more than usual, it could indicate trouble. The cat lacking the motivation to play, eat, or interact can signal anything from infections to chronic pain.

Experts suggest you pay extra attention if the quality of your cat’s rest shifts. If a social cat starts hiding in unusual places to sleep, or if a senior cat seems disoriented upon waking, they may be experiencing discomfort or cognitive changes. Since cats mask illness well, a shift in sleeping habits is often the first clue that they need a vet’s help.
