James Cameron Teases More ‘Avatar’ Stories, but Don’t Expect Them Too Soon

Cameron’s billion-worthy sci-fi franchise has three more movies to go with, and this might be bad news for those excited about the Avatar animated series.
More than fifteen years after the first Avatar movie’s release, James Cameron is far from being done with the hit franchise and has yet a long schedule to follow, potentially adding some related projects on the way.
With two movies released at the moment, Avatar is getting a third instalment this December, arriving in theatres after nine delays and five years after filming was done.
While there are still two Avatar movies that are in different stages of production, James Cameron has recently teased his bigger plans for exploring the franchise’s world, though you better not expect any major update on the matter anytime soon.
James Cameron Says He Already Pitched ‘Avatar’ Animated Anthology Series to Disney
Even though the franchise’s legacy has already expanded to a series of video games and a theme park at Walt Disney World, the director thinks he can still use the traditional moviemaking method to delve more into the world of Pandora.
As Cameron recently revealed while talking about the upcoming and highly anticipated third instalment titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, he already has some ideas that he’s brought to Disney to discuss.
“I said, ‘Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that’s essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn’t have expected from that world’. There might even be an animated feature in there — it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature”, Cameron said in an interview with Empire.
He also added that this format has proved itself many times in the industry, with many franchises developing sequels or spinoffs as successful as the original movies.
According to Cameron, these stories give some sort of creative freedom since there’s enough room for the franchise’s helmers to explore outside of the original film’s context.
“Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want”, the director stated.
‘Avatar’ Animated Series Isn’t Coming Anytime Soon
Considering how much work is yet to be done with the franchise’s next two movies planned for 2029 and 2031 releases respectively, fans shouldn’t expect the teased anthology series to be dropped until the fifth movie premieres.
As Cameron also revealed, he had already started gathering ideas for the new project, but that doesn’t mean that the show will be pushed into production soon.
“We haven't done much with that yet. We're still gathering our stories and that sort of thing,” he adds, “and I've got to find the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it”, the director added.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently scheduled for a release on December 19.
