James Gunn Seemingly Kills All Hope For Legends of Tomorrow and Ayer Cut
It would seem that DC is not looking back at all.
Spearheaded by new leadership, DC appears to not regret any cancellation decision it made. James Gunn, a new DC Studios co-CEO, has addressed fans' calls to save Legends of Tomorrow (which was cancelled) and release the "Ayer Cut" of Suicide Squad (which never happened).
However, even though Gunn underlined the importance of listening to fans, it doesn't look like their requests will be fulfilled.
"Although our ability to interact on Twitter has been lessened due to the workload of our new positions, we are listening & open to everything as we embark on this journey, & will continue to do so for the next few years," Gunn tweeted. "But all our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, & telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows, & animated projects."
While Legends of Tomorrow is already cancelled, the release of the Ayer cut seemed possible for a lot of fans before Gunn directly hinted at the DC future path. The Guardians of the Galaxy director was the one who took over Suicide Squad after Ayer, and despite the movie featured some characters from the first film, it was not considered a sequel.
The studio cut of Suicide Squad 2 was blasted by Ayer, who made it clear that he would like to see his version released.
"My cut is intricate and emotional journey with some bad people who are sh** on and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul). The studio cut is not my movie," Ayer said back in 2021.
But Warner Bros has repeatedly underlined that it will not be releasing the Ayer cut. Now that Gunn appears to reaffirm the studio's stance, fans once again took to Twitter to try and persuade him.
"Move forward of course but let's at least do right by David. His project got ruined. Release his cut to video and relieve some pressure and gain some good PR but 100% move on to new voices as well as stories," Twitter user jwdaddy80 said.
Other fans argued that "DC will not reach its full potential" until the new leadership "actually give us, the fans, what we want."
The new leadership, however, is adamant that the DC should concentrate on big franchises and big theatrical releases, not niche and streaming projects.
