James Gunn Wants to Recast His Favorite Actor — And I’m So Here for It

Great performances matter more than sticking to canon faces.
I’ll be honest — I love when directors stick with actors they trust, and James Gunn does this better than anyone. So when he hinted that Chukwudi Iwuji might return to the DCU as someone other than Clemson Murn? I was all in.
Iwuji already nailed the High Evolutionary in Guardians Vol. 3, and if Gunn wants to bring him back in a weirder, less humanoid role? Let’s go.
During a Peacemaker podcast, Gunn teased that while Murn is canon, his face might not be. That’s classic Gunn — keeping the emotional core while remixing the visuals. And honestly, casting Iwuji as someone like Etrigan the Demon would be wild in the best way.
The guy’s got serious range, and I’d love to see him lean into something more mythic, even monstrous.
It also says a lot about Gunn’s long-term vision for the DCU. He’s not just building a world — he’s building a repertoire company, full of trusted actors who can shape-shift between roles and tones.
That kind of consistency behind the scenes could be exactly what the DCU needs to stand apart from the MCU’s formula.
At the end of the day, great performances matter more than strict continuity. If Iwuji’s back in any form, I’m watching. And if Gunn says he’s one of the best he’s ever worked with — that’s all I need to know.
