Jeremy Renner Gives Hilarious Explanation for Turning Down Hawkeye Season 2

There’s a reason why another season of Marvel’s acclaimed TV series never happened — here’s what made Jeremy Renner say “no, thank you” to Hawkeye despite its massive popularity.
There might be a long-standing rumour that Marvel’s shows rarely get a sophomore season after the extremely successful first one, but Hawkeye was expected to break that trend.
Starring Jeremy Renner, the series, released back in 2021, followed Clint Barton a year after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
Eventually, Hawkeye received worldwide acclaim and was expected to move forward with at least one more season, but things got shut down pretty quickly — and it has something to do with Jeremy Renner’s concerns about one of Marvel’s biggest problems so far.
Renner Turned Down Hawkeye Season 2 Over Half-Salary Offer
The actor’s recent revelations do seem to confirm that the superhero studio hasn’t been in the best shape ever since Avengers: Endgame left theaters worldwide.
In a new interview with High Performance, Renner admitted there was a money issue involved when it came to discussing Hawkeye’s potential season 2.
“They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount,’” the actor revealed.
He then continued, jokingly stating that the Marvel execs probably didn’t consider him a complete human being after his almost fatal snowmobile accident in 2023.
“I’m like, ‘I’m sorry? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season,” Renner added.
What Hawkeye Fans Have to Say About Season 2 Money Issue
Even with another season probably never happening after all, Hawkeye remains one of the most acclaimed Marvel shows so far, which is a reason why some of its fans didn’t waste much time before slamming Disney for cutting its budgets.
“It is possible he just would have had a smaller role in season 2 and that’s why they’d pay him less…but also he says it would be 8 months of his time and that would be insane if he wasn’t costarring in the same way as season 1. Either way it’s a bad look for marvel. Who knows maybe something will change”, Redditor JackMorelli13 reflected on the matter in a thread.
“My man was done dirty with the salary, c'mon Disney dont be rats (for once)”, Xx_Dark-Shrek_xX urged.
“It's also possible that his role was meant to be smaller. But if you want an OG Avenger to do a TV show in 2025, you're going to need to pay up. Pretty silly if this is the main/only reason it didn't happen”, Wattentheworld put in.
- On Rotten Tomatoes, Hawkeye holds scores of 92% and 88% from critics and viewers
- On IMDb, the show is rated 7.5/10
