Jumanji’s Forgotten Sequel Gets a Second Chance on Netflix
There is so much potential in that film.
Even though family movies are made to be enjoyed with children, there are some movies that many adults re-watch on their own, many years after they have grown up. Whether it's the comforting feeling of nostalgia or a story that's just too good to pass up, it doesn't matter when the urge to play it again is strong.
For many people, 1995's Jumanji is one of those movies. However, if you are a fan of the concept but already know the movie frame by frame, you might be interested in trying its criminally underrated sequel instead.
Is Zathura: A Space Adventure Good?
Released in 2005, Zathura: A Space Adventure is one of those family films that failed to impress upon its release, but could be a fun addition to your movie night in 2024. Created as a standalone sequel and second installment of the 1995 film Jumanji and its franchise, Zathura: A Space Adventure has been unjustly forgotten.
Starring Josh Hutcherson and Jonah Bobo as Walter and Danny, two brothers who have never gotten along, the movie follows their journey to find an old board game that has trapped their house in outer space. Together with their teenage sister Lisa, played by Kristen Stewart, they must survive the game and return safely to Earth.
The movie is everything you'd want from a mid-2000s family sci-fi journey, and everything audiences loved about Jumanji. It is fun and dynamic, has some very nostalgic tunes and special effects, and can easily transport any young millennial back to their childhood.
Unfortunately, the movie was not met with such enthusiasm at the time. It flopped in theaters, costing $65 million to make and earning the same $65 million at the box office, and was quickly replaced and forgotten by other films targeting the same audience. On Rotten Tomatoes, however, the film still stands with a solid 76% rating.
