Karl Urban Has a Lot to Say About That Maeve Sex Scene in The Boys

Few fans of The Boys had "Butcher having sex with Queen Maeve" on their season 3 bingo card, and yet there we all were, watching the two kicking it off in episode 5. As if the mere revelation of Butcher and Maeve working together against Homelander wasn't enough...

According to showrunner Eric Kripke, the steamy scene was inspired by Monster’s Ball, when Billy Bob Thorton and Halle Berry’s characters also hook up amid their own desperation and grief.

For Karl Urban, who portrays Butcher in The Boys, it's pretty similar to how Kripke viewed it. No matter how unexpected it was to see on screen, Butcher and Maeve's one-night-stand makes sense in a way they were both in a dark place.

With both Butcher and Maeve being "lost and desperate," it was "a logical thing" for them to hook off, Urban believes. But more importantly, the actor also considers this particular steamy scene to be one of the best he ever filmed.

In an interview with Men's Health, Urban recalled that the scene was carefully choreographed with the help of an intimacy coordinator "very much like you would a fight or a dance."

"It was something we approached very technically and respectfully. I’ve got to say, having done tonally similar scenes in the past, I really think that this stands out as one of the better examples because it was so choreographed," Urban explained. "We knew what we were doing. It wasn’t, 'Okay, you guys, just go for it!'"

It's heartwarming to know that the production of a show as gory and unsettling as The Boys is a polar opposite of what actually is going on on screen. Of all things steamy in season 3, Butcher and Maeve's sex scene was probably one of the tamest. These two are lucky they were never involved in Herogasm, aren't they?

Season 4 premiere date remains unknown, with the release postponed in solidarity with the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes.
