Twilight’s actor has recently debuted as a director with The Chronology of Water, and now Stewart says the movie industry is in a serious state of emergency.

The game rules in the movie and TV industry have been changing drastically throughout the last several years, with more and more prominent filmmakers demanding equal rights for both male and female workers.

Twilight’s star Kristen Stewart has been one of the loudest voices in this regard, now advocating for more opportunities for women to make their own movies about whatever concerns them while also releasing her own feature debut The Chronology of Water this year.

The movie’s success at the Cannes Film Festival is about to pave the way for Stewart’s many more directorial works which, she still fears, might be subjected to the alarming situation in Hollywood right now.

Kristen Stewart Slams Hollywood for Putting Women in “the Invisible Cage”

As someone who has been dealing with the modern society’s prejudices ever since Twilight came out in 2008, the actress has repeatedly stated that she’s willing to make her own contribution to creating a new system which would allow women in the industry be the way they just feel like.

“We can discuss wage gaps and taxes on tampons and measure it in lots of quantifiable ways, but the violence of silencing ... It’s like we’re not even supposed to be angry. But I could eat this podium with a fork and f—king knife, I’m so angry”, Stewart said at the Academy Women’s Luncheon (via The Guardian) which occurred this Tuesday.

The actress then continued, saying that her own attempt to turn her passion project into an actual movie (which took her eight years in total) made her “acknowledge the invisible cage that we are all living in and how easy it is to story our way out there”.

In the end, Stewart went on to discuss how female directors can change the course of modern cinema and how they should stay away from the current system that is visibly dying now.

“We are allowed to be proud of ourselves. But let’s try not to be tokenised. Let’s start printing our own currency”, Stewart concluded.

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, The Chronology of Water holds a score of 94% from critics
  • On IMDb, the movie is rated 6.5/10

Having premiered in Cannes back in May, Stewart’s biographical romantic drama The Chronology of Water is now set to become available for bigger audiences, but no one is talking about the movie’s streaming release yet.

For now, the film is yet to arrive in theatres across the US sometime in December, with a wider release following in January next year.

The Chronology of Water is based on Lidia Yuknavitch’s autobiographical book of the same name and chronicles Lidia’s life from childhood alongside an abusive father to her stardom as a teacher and writer.
