The Great Gatsby didn't really impress critics, but it got a drastically different reaction from audiences.

Summary:

  • 2013's The Great Gatsby featured an all-star cast and delivered a fresh take on F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel
  • Unfortunately, critics found the movie rather lacking, saying that it failed to capture the spirit of the book
  • The audiences, however, were much more favorable, as they found the movie quite entertaining

The new month is almost upon us, and with it comes the update of movies and shows available for streaming on Netflix, with some leaving the lineup and others, both new releases and old classics, arriving on the service.

The Great Gatsby Attempted To Provide A Fresh Take On An Iconic Novel

Speaking of classics, 2013's The Great Gatsby, based on the legendary novel of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald, can now be considered a modern one, as it's been over a decade since the movie was released.

With an all star cast including, but not limited to, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, the story is set in the 1920's and told from the perspective of Nick Carraway, a struggling writer who has recently moved to New York City.

He soon becomes fascinated by his mysterious and extremely wealthy neighbor, who frequently throws bizarre parties in his mansion, but has an extremely hazy past, as no one really knows where he came from or how he got his wealth.

Eventually, he meets the exquisite magnate Jay Gatsby in person and, unexpectedly even for Nick himself, befriends him, slowly uncovering the truth behind Jay's origins and unwittingly becoming entangled in an elaborate scheme.

The Movie’s Reception Was Quite Polarizing

The film received a rather lukewarm reception from critics upon its release, who were unimpressed by director Baz Luhrmann 's attempt to deliver yet another take on the iconic story, claiming that it clearly lacked substance and failed to capture the spirit of the story.

Fans, on the other hand, were much more positive about the movie, saying that while it wasn't completely flawless, it was a perfectly entertaining retelling of a classic story.

The film's distinctive, bright visual style makes it memorable and manages to convey the eccentric nature of the titular character, making every frame feel extremely vivid and energetic.

They also praised the efforts of the cast, who do a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life, especially Leonardo DiCaprio, who absolutely steals every second he is on screen.

With all of this in mind, The Great Gatsby may not be the best adaptation of the iconic classic, but it may prove to be well worth your time.

The movie will be available on Netflix on February 1, 2024.
