HBO’s historical drama had a new recurring socialite for season 3, and it seems like Leslie Uggams’ character might be the one to put Peggy’s future at risk.

With less than a week away from its high-stakes finale, The Gilded Age’s season 3 has brought its drama to a completely new level across a couple of latest episodes, and the ongoing instalment’s new figure has made it all the way more concerning for Peggy’s future.

After getting an accidental chance to work for the van Rhijn household, Peggy has long remained silent on some details from her past that would significantly jeopardize her future.

However, The Gilded Age’s new character, portrayed by Leslie Uggams, was the one to bring the shocking news to Elizabeth Kirkland, and the outcome has yet to find its culmination in the season’s next episode.

In the show’s ongoing instalment, Leslie Uggams joins the leading cast as Mrs. Ernestine Brown, a friend of Elizabeth Kirkland and a member of the Black elite community in Newport.

A couple of episodes back, The Gilded Age’s fans saw Mrs. Brown dying to reveal some shocking truth about Peggy Scott to Elizabeth Kirkland, the mother of William Kirkland who falls for Peggy when he’s called to offer some medical help after she falls ill.

As it was revealed earlier in the series, Peggy was married before and had a child with a man who her father considered uneducated and deprived of any potential.

Forced to have their marriage annulled, Peggy ended up pregnant and, by the time she gave birth to her son, she was lied about the child being dead while he was in fact sent away for another family to adopt him.

In The Gilded Age’s season 3 episode 7, Elizabeth reveals the truth about Peggy’s past to William who now intends to talk to the latter himself before making a major decision about their possible future together.

Since William has quickly become many fans’ favorite after being introduced in season 3, some have already started rooting for him to prove himself even more worthy by showing Peggy that he doesn’t really care about her past.

However, it still doesn’t mean that Peggy would throw herself into his hands once he shows up with a ring to offer her.

“I think William might propose to Peggy (or he'll ask her if she feels they're committed enough for that) but she'll say no because she needs to be sure that he will stand up for her against his mother and not just smooth things over as he's been doing”, Redditor AnnaChef theorised in a show-related thread.

“I love Dr. Kirkland, but am enjoying seeing Peggy write and carve out her own path in her career so much that I hope she doesn't get engaged, especially since it would feel pretty rushed with just 2 episodes”, thankfulforyourhelp revealed.

“Despite how well matched Peggy and Dr. Kirkland are, he has a lot of growing to do. Dr. Kirkland has to quit being a mama’s boy because it’s clear that he and Mrs. Kirkland value different things in a wife”, multiequations added.

In the meantime, The Gilded Age’s season 3 finale will arrive on HBO Max on August 10.
