Stephanie Nur did not know Lioness was bringing Aaliyah back, and says she found the clues by rewatching season 1
Lioness spent eight episodes asking who took Joe McNamara, and answered it in the last two minutes with a face from season 1. The actor attached to that face has now explained how the show kept it from her, and what she still has not been told.
Spoilers for the season 3 finale follow. "The Unraveling" went up on Paramount+ on Sunday, and it ends by naming the person behind both kidnappings of Joe McNamara: Aaliyah Amrohi, last seen in season 1, played by Stephanie Nur. Nur gave her first interview about it to Taste of Country on Monday, and the short version is that the production kept it from her too.
Asked whether she had always known this was the plan, her answer was four words long: "No, I did not know this." She had no expectation of coming back at all. What she had instead, after season 1 wrapped, was a recurring dream about the character she had just finished playing.
She declined to describe the dreams in any detail, and put them down to something closer to processing than to plotting: her unconscious sorting out what had happened to Aaliyah at the end of the first season. Which is a useful reminder of how the twist actually lands. Aaliyah was not written as a villain in waiting. She became one because Cruz, the Lioness who had become her lover, killed her father.

She went back and looked for the clues herself
When Taylor Sheridan's team told her he wanted Aaliyah back, Nur did what the audience has been doing since Sunday night: she rewatched. Her verdict is that the groundwork was laid, even if nobody could reasonably have been expected to spot it — the seeds were planted, and only look obvious in hindsight.

Keeping it quiet cost her something. She describes going to Texas to shoot and then refusing to leave her accommodation, because somebody in a coffee shop recognised her and said the character's name out loud. Her own friends watch the show, which made the secret harder rather than easier.

It is worth registering how much the finale was carrying while it sat on this. Nicole Kidman's Kaitlyn Meade, Morgan Freeman's Edwin Mullins and Michael Kelly's Byron Westfield spend the hour inside a White House convinced Ukraine was responsible, while Joe works from her own conviction that Iran wanted revenge. Both readings are wrong, and the correction comes from someone who has not been on screen since 2023 — a withholding trick that Reacher pulled over six episodes this year rather than two minutes.
Nobody has told her about a season 4 either
This is the part that matters for anyone planning their autumn. Paramount+ has not confirmed a fourth season, and the actor now positioned as the show's antagonist is not working from privileged information. She describes herself as watching the show as a spectator and waiting on the same announcement everyone else is.
The obvious place a fourth season would go is a meeting between Aaliyah and Cruz, played by Laysla De Oliveira, since season 1 was largely the two of them. Nur says she and De Oliveira have not spoken about it, and offers a reading of that silence that sounds like it came from the show: right now Cruz's world and Aaliyah's world are not mixed, and perhaps that is the point.
The one door she closes firmly is the identity of the man who tells Aaliyah her kidnapping attempts have failed. Asked whether he is a brother or a lover, she said she loved the question and then said she could not answer it yet — which is a rather different thing from not knowing.
