Literally Melting: How to Bake the Airy, 4-Ingredient Cloud Cake That’s Taking Over the Internet
The most delicious marshmallow-like dessert that will require only 20 minutes of cooking — the rest is for the oven to do.
Even though we can get any kind of dessert we crave for in a local bakery, sometimes we also happen to wish for something simple but tasty and home-made.
This airy and light dessert often called cloud cake might be just what you’re looking for if you don’t want to do much harm to your figure having a chocolate cake after dinner. Another good news is that you likely already have all the necessary ingredients stored in your kitchen.
Here’s what you need: 3 egg whites, 30 g of sugar, 10 g of cornstarch, 1 pinch of vanilla extract, 1 pinch of salt, 2–3 drops of liquid food coloring (if you want).
It’s best to preheat the oven to 150°C.
The egg whites should be placed in a deep bowl and cooled in the fridge beforehand. To guarantee that the egg whites whip properly, make sure both the bowl and the egg whites are well cooled, and the mixer beaters are completely clean and dry.
Add a pinch of salt to the egg whites and beat on low speed for about 3 minutes, until fluffy.
Gradually add the sugar in portions and increase the mixer speed, beating the whites for another 5 minutes, until stiff peaks form and the mixture is smooth and fluffy. Add food coloring if you wish.
Mix well. Add the cornstarch and vanilla extract. Beat for about 1 more minute, until smooth.
Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper. Spoon the egg white mixture onto the baking sheet and shape it into a hemisphere. Bake in an oven preheated to 150°C for about 30 minutes. At first, the mixture will expand significantly in size during baking, but then it will settle slightly.
Once the time is up, carefully remove the cloud cake from the oven, let it cool slightly, and serve.
