These are projects whose finale Netflix never let us see, despite their devoted fan base and high scores.
Netflix is famous not only for its hit series but also for its unexpected – and sometimes outrageous – cancellations. Shows with excellent scores, loyal audiences, and promising plots should live long, but they don't.
One of the most painful examples was Lockwood & Co., a mystical detective series with charismatic characters and a unique atmosphere, which was canceled after the first season. But this is far from the only case.
1. 'Lockwood & Co.', 2023
IMDb Score: 7.4/10
Several decades ago in The Problem occurred – the cities were filled with ghosts. Only children and teenagers who could see creatures from the other world could fight them.
Lucy escaped from a provincial town and ended up at Lockwood & Co. The agency's members take on the most dangerous but profitable cases.
Lockwood & Co. captures the essence of a high-quality British show that respects tradition while offering something new, standing out even against an abundance of other teen and supernatural projects.
However, this did not save it from cancellation. After only one season, Netflix axed it due to low viewership.
2. 'The OA', 2016-2019
IMDb Score: 7.8/10
If the series is produced, directed, and written by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, you can be sure that it will have a powerful storyline.
This duo of filmmakers knows how to create projects that completely absorb your attention. One of Brit and Zal's best works is definitely the series The OA.
Like Lockwood & Co., The OA was canceled having only two seasons, but even after six years, fans continue to fight and hope that they will someday see the end of this story.
3. 'Anne With An E', 2017-2019
IMDb Score: 8.6/10
Anne With An E is one of the cult Netflix series, whose fans started petitions after its cancellation, actively streamed the already released episodes to boost ratings, and recommended it to everyone they knew. But it didn't help.
The story follows an orphan who is finally taken in by a foster family, but when she arrives at the farm, they tell her they were expecting a boy. Rather than despairing or getting upset, the girl tries to prove to her foster parents that she deserves a chance.
4. 'The Society', 2019
IMDb Score: 7.1/10
The plot unfolds in the small town of West Ham. Due to an unpleasant smell and the town's slow response to the problem, teenagers are sent to a campsite until the smell is eliminated.
After a storm washes away the road, the teenagers are brought back at night. But their town is empty – all the adults and children have disappeared. They discover that the internet and communications are down. Instead of roads leading out of town, there is an impassable forest.
The show was originally supposed to get a second season, but Netflix canceled the plans because it was impossible to gather all the actors on set during the pandemic.
5. 'Shadow and Bone', 2021-2023
IMDb Score: 7.5/10
When cartographer Alina Starkov discovers she has a superpower that could change the fate of a war-torn world, the forces of evil unite against her.
Shadow and Bone is an adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's book series. Netflix had ambitious plans for the show – viewers were supposed to see three or four seasons of the gripping fantasy story. However, they only saw two.
As with previous projects, Shadow and Bone received excellent scores from viewers and critics alike, but Netflix was dissatisfied with the viewership, despite the series remaining at the top of the platform for a long time.
6. 'Warrior Nan', 2020-2022
IMDb Score: 7.0/10
In 2022, Netflix canceled Warrior Nun, a screen adaptation of Ben Dunn's urban fantasy comic. The project lasted only two seasons.
However, fans did not give up. They launched a large-scale campaign on social media to convince other streaming platforms to pay attention to the show and give it a second chance. After six months, their efforts paid off.
The series' creator, Simon Barry, announced that the story of Warrior Nun will continue in the form of a trilogy of movies. However, nothing has been heard about filming since 2023, and the project remains in limbo.
7. '1899', 2022
IMDb Score: 7.3/10
1899 is a series from Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the creators of the sci-fi time travel series Dark. This show tells the story of a group of migrants who set off from London to New York on a ship in 1899 in search of a better life.
During their voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, they discover a missing ship from several weeks prior. As they explore it, they realize they have encountered a supernatural force.
Like Dark, 1899 is an original series with an unconventional premise. However, apparently, Netflix bosses expected more excitement around the series from the creators of one of the platform's main sci-fi hits, and they canceled it after one season.
8. 'Sense8', 2015-2018
IMDb Score: 8.2/10
Any project by the Wachowskis still arouses keen interest from viewers. Despite its shortcomings, their TV project Sense8 turned out to be an amazing, gripping spectacle.
The story follows eight people living completely different lives in different parts of the world who suddenly discover that they are connected to each other. Someone tries to bring them together, but those who see them as a threat start hunting them down.
The project ran successfully for two seasons. After its conclusion, fans organized a campaign in support of Sense8. Then, an additional two-hour finale was released.
