Dakota Johnson’s latest outing really brings out the “rotten” in Rotten Tomatoes.

Summary:

  • Up until today, it didn’t seem like any Marvel movie could get close to Morbius in terms of its Critic Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Dakota Johnson ’s Madame Web plummeted to an 18% score on the release day, almost matching Morbius’s current 15%.
  • Peculiarly, half of the Madame Web’s writers also created Morbius which might explain the new movie’s performance.

Two years ago, Morbius was released — and it was immediately recognized as “one of the movies that’s ever been made” by the audience. One of Marvel’s worst-rated films, its Rotten Tomatoes score quickly plummeted down to never recover again, and we didn’t think we’d see another Marvel movie reach the same low so quickly.

Madame Web Just Hit The Theaters But Missed

Directed by S.J. Clarkson and led by Dakota Johnson, Madame Web has only been out for a day, and it’s already showing disastrous results in terms of critical reception. The movie hit the theaters on February 14, and while it’s way too early to judge its commercial success as the opening weekend still lies ahead, its reviews are… Here.

They are here, and they’re nothing short of disastrous.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Madame Web currently “boasts” a Critic Score of just 18%, which makes it almost as bad as Jared Leto ’s Morbius: the latter is sitting at 15%. Dakota Johnson’s latest outing is apparently up for a terribly underwhelming start, and it’s hard to imagine that the opening weekend’s crowds will change that.

Madame Web Gets Destroyed By Critics

Whether you’re a clairvoyant or not, it doesn’t take much experience with the Inner Eye to see where the movie is heading. It’s painfully difficult to find positive reviews of Madame Web from critics, and the few that gave them didn’t go into much detail. The majority that hated Sony’s newest film, however, got rather candid about it.

“There is something sickly compelling about how disjointed and thoroughly incompetent Madame Web is, less as ‘so-bad-it's-fun Midnight Movie’ and more ‘studio film-making in the 2020s at its very worst’ case study. <...> The film is as dumb and schlocky as the worst of the genre, with lousy network TV effects, uninvolving action and unfunny and inelegant dialogue,” The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee wrote.

Perhaps the funniest thing we’ve learned about Madame Web amid its immediate downfall is that it was written by the same people who created Morbius. That’s right: out of the four writers, two were responsible for the horrible lackluster that Jared Leto’s notorious cinematic outing turned out to be. History repeats itself, it seems.

We’ll keep a close eye on Madame Web in the days to come, though; perhaps, the critics and the audience won’t agree on the movie as it often happens, and the box office revenue will make up for the initial embarrassment.
