Mahershala Ali agrees Blade was the biggest failure of Kevin Feige's career — so where did the year he spent training for it go?
Kevin Feige called Marvel’s failure to make Blade with Mahershala Ali the biggest of his career. Ali has now said he agrees — and in the same conversation added up what those seven years took from him. A year of training. A blown knee. A city he moved his family to for nothing.
The exchange lands late in Ali’s GQ episode, One More Question, this week. Zach Baron asks why the film never went into production. Ali’s answer has an edge on it: that is a Kevin Feige question, he says. They had a two-time Oscar winner under contract and billions of dollars, and he still does not know what stopped it.
Then Baron reads Feige’s own words back. The Marvel Studios president told the Happy Sad Confused podcast over the summer that he felt like a giant loser and a failure for never getting the picture off the ground with Ali. Ali does not soften it: he agrees one hundred percent, twice over, and says Feige should feel that way. He has said before that he was ready and Marvel knew it. He had never itemised the bill.
What the waiting actually cost him
He spent a year in training, he says, and trained hard enough to blow out his knee. He learned sword work; name the martial art, he told Baron, and he was in it. He uprooted his family to Atlanta, where the film was meant to shoot, then sat there while the start date slid. He first met Marvel in 2019, and by that summer was on a Comic-Con stage being announced — an announcement he says he never wanted.
We did all that and had a story greenlit, and then we don’t have any deliverables. I can’t deliver until they deliver. They never delivered.
The paper trail is unusually full for a film nobody shot. Bassam Tariq was hired to direct and left in September 2022, two months before cameras were due to roll. Variety reported in November 2023 that the script had passed through at least five writers, from Watchmen’s Stacy Osei-Kuffour to Michael Starrbury. Yann Demange took the chair and walked away in June 2024. Then the strikes. Then nothing.

Where a year of sword training ended up
Here is the part the headlines skipped: the director Marvel first hired for Blade directs the film Ali is promoting now. Tariq sent him the script for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother in December 2024, six months after Demange quit the Marvel picture. It is a genre collision about a grieving assassin raising his children alone, only the second leading role of Ali’s career after Swan Song — and it runs on the fight training Marvel paid for and never used. The production had neither time nor money to build that skill set, so he tapped back in with coaches in Los Angeles and found it all there.

The arithmetic underneath stays bleak even so. Baron reads him the films he has made since Green Book — Into the Spider-Verse, Alita: Battle Angel, Swan Song, Leave the World Behind, Jurassic World Rebirth, Your Mother — five features in eight years, for one of a handful of living actors with two acting Oscars. Ali’s correction: it should have been six or seven. He also had to ask to lead True Detective rather than being offered it, and says one project in seven years arrived as an obvious yes. He said yes. It has not been made.
Feige has given an account of the mechanism, if not the decision. Speaking to press in July 2025, he framed the delays as a symptom of Marvel’s over-expansion into Disney+ output, the stretch where, by his description, quantity trumped quality for the first time. When the studio re-examined how it developed anything, Blade stopped moving. That explains the stall, not why a greenlit story with a contracted lead never got a workable script.
Marvel has not commented. Blade has no director, no writer of record and no date. What it has is a star who has now co-signed the studio head’s own verdict on it, a closed window in which he was willing to wait, and a stick-fighting technique visible in somebody else’s movie.
